Ok so I am at a crossroads. I am carrying around my little 6.4 and am as unhappy playing this game as I have ever been. Why? Because I can’t hit a 7 iron 160 yards. I know that some of you would look at that statement with confusion so let me elaborate a bit.

I am 5’10 200, and am pretty athletic although very inflexible. I have 2 golf swings: 1 that is ‘full speed’ and results in occasionally great and occasionally terrible shots and not much in between. Drives would carry 260 easy, little draw, weak irons………….80--85. Swing 2 is a 60-75% swing that produces good (never great) shots, lots of gir’s and lot of 25-30 foot putts, distance is 1-1.5 clubs shorter than swing 1……..77—80. Impact is much better, but I can’t and won’t play this game feathering 7 irons 140 yards into the greens. Not when I know I could hit it 160 had I ‘done it right’.

So I am left with the thought that maybe I can’t swing full, given my inflexiblity, and do it right at the same time. I shot 79 last night after a front nine where I couldn’t keep it on the planet. It was so unsatisfying because I had to limp through the back nine hitting 1 club longer into every green. I hate it.

Anybody else been there?

Dear jbrunc,

Consistency is just around the BBKIB corner.

Sincerely, Have you tried it ?

At least you didn't choke your guys out on national television.

Hang in there.

Kevin-did you feel that way at the time or after the tournament? You made a great putt on 18 and almost made a miraculous putt on 17. The only thing I was curious about was the decision to hit driver out of the light rough on 18 but I obviously don't know how comfortable you are with that shot. I noticed you seemed to be moving quickly after the first bunker shot on 18
but then you came back to hole out the putt after the second bunker shot. You did really well.......choking was not something I even considered.

I think you're playing a dangerous game with your melon when you start putting distance expectations on each of your clubs.

What is the tightest grouping, with reasonable distance, can you hit ten 7 irons? That should be your 7 iron distance... regardless of what it used to be, or what you want it to be. What it shouldn't be is what can you hit it some of the time. Trying to play at the top end of your distance capacity is a guaranteed way of assuring you'll be constantly disappointed in your shots and score. Been there, done that.

Oh snap!!!! Im starting to think like you no wonder my scores are dropping! Im almost ready for a regulation size course.

Just afterward. I wasn't nervous just didn't produce which is a form of choking I suppose. I was only moving quickly because my wife doesn't know how to rake bunkers so I had to do it myself:) The lie was perfect and I'm very comfortable with that shot, just hit it slightly heavy.

If you that you will go in there and fish em out! I used to have a love hate relantionship with my golf game. Once I started to work out what, where, and why were my misses and like granato said what is my most consistant yardage for any given iron not my longest but most consistant and then takin into account wind and lie conditions oh and also work on chipping ang putting scores are dropping. can I hit my 9 iron 150 sure, can I do it consistanly no. heck sometimes Ill use my 6 or 5 iron just depends on the conditions and lie. I see that creativity around the greens from 150 in is awesome Im going to try to use the ground game. I sometimes play with a guy who will use is putter on short par 3 and he will use it from 100 to 120yds out hes made a few in the cup from that distance. Whatever u do dont give up untill u really just want to quit/stop. For me my best golf is just ahead how far head dont know but I know its coming I can sense it that in itself is hell indecribably I think I spelled that wrong.

The "I'm thinking about quitting the game and need talked off the ledge" threads.

Thanks Kevin........I thought BM was complaining about my response to your "choking" post. I thought of you after reading some comments
about Calc's caddie last week( in his win) vs. his wife who is normally on the bag. I won't put you on the spot but I have to believe that professional caddies do more than tote the bag.

no choke whatsoever IMO

How many putts would someone have to hit from that spot on 17 before they missed just one in that manner.

and then on 18 to get in the playoff

Perfect read, perfect speed, perfect stroke, center of the cup and it looked like he knew it before it was half way there.

Looked pretty clutch to me.
