Obviously it was a limited field, but it was a quality limited field, and Tiger played very good golf on Sunday. He was one shot off the lead and he shot the lowest round of the day (tied with Furyk and Casey). He hit a poor second shot into the 2nd par 5 on the back 9, but it wasn't an awful shot. And he hit two pulls on the par 3s. But those were basically his only misses all day. He is ONLY missing left now - a slight pull. That shot that he used to hit 5 miles right? It's gone. Tiger has FAR more control of his golf ball now than he had even when he won the US Open in 2008.
Zach played good golf down the stretch, making an amazing par on 15 and then birdieing 16 to go one up. If ANY other player had played 17 and 18 the way that Tiger did, everyone would be saying what a tremendous finish it was. But because it's Tiger, folks are focusing on his misses.
And I'm sorry, but to say that Tiger looked uncomfortable and out of sorts on Sunday just doesn't fly if you've been watching Tiger closely the last few years. His is SO MUCH more comfortable with his swing now. I honestly think he has won majors in the past when he was LESS comfortable with his swing (again, 08 US Open).
As Hogan famously said, golf is about misses, and right now Tiger's misses are better than most others'.
If Tiger stays healthy and keeps putting like he did down the stretch, then he'll win a bunch of tournaments next year. If he stays healthy and putts like he did the first few days of the Presidents Cup, then I think he'll win a ton of money and have a bunch of top 10s. I hope he stays healthy.
