Tiger - Hand Path Analysis by Brandel Chamblee

The other day, I was very critical of a recent analysis of Tiger's swing by Brandel. So it's only fair that I post this new analysis by Brandel, which I think is dead-on!

Even a broken clock is right twice a day! As Kevin knows, I'm a fan of the "mini-carry" featured in the swings of McDowell, Garrigus and Tseng.

A very wise man once said:

I am pretty sure I have never advocated a "vertical" hand path.

Yuk.

:)

I wish I could see more of what is being talked about without thinking a lot of the differences being due the different camera angles.

Despite the slight difference in camera angles, I still think there's a big difference in hand paths.

Also,Tiger has not over rotated his left arm in his latest swing at the top.In this regard he is half way between his Butch and Haney swing. He looks similar to his 2000 swing halfway into his downswing as well.Maybe he has said enough is enough and is seeing Butch secretly.LOL

In theory, shouldn't Foley's idea of "optimal" result in a push-draw bias like Stack And Tilt?

Who knows, Tiger might not even be listening to Foley.

I agree.Tiger's current swing is nothing like SnT from DTL.Tiger is keeping the club more in front of him throughout the swing similar to his 2000 action.Stack n tilt swings tend to have the club deep and behind throughout the swing. He's definitely gone back to a more upright action whether it's intentional or not only Tiger knows.

Those ones he drew were total bullshit, even when tigers hands went out he kept the line going down. There's no mini carry on the right, not even close

OK you're right, I have to agree, they are not crap. They are just not very good when you consider what has gone into creating them.

My use of crap is in the mould of an old pal of mine who when he hit it 280 with a slight fade would respond by claiming it was "crap, utter bullshit, right off the fekin heel again, nearly missed it, couldn't hit my own arse with a banjo today, etc". It was genuinely crap for him, but obviously great for the average Joe.

Kevin,

I just think Tiger's hand path is substantially less vertical than it was a year or two ago. Maybe I'll do some research later to try to illustrate that point.

My guess is that if I go through Tiger's swings on YouTube from 2009 to 2011, he will consistently be showing an initial hand path that is almost completely vertical.

Brian thinks that's "sub-optimal." I think that's "sub-optimal." Even if you're trying to hit a draw. And I bet Tiger was trying to hit a cut with the vast majority of his swings from 2009 to 2011.

Kevin, what is your position? Do you agree that an initial hand path that is almost totally vertical is "sub-optimal"?

I've tried to clarify that my opinion of vertical hand path never meant 90 degrees to the ground. Although there are plenty of guys that let their hands go straight down initially before out. I will say this, a mini carry is certainly not optimal.
