tiger's takeaway

i was just watching some clips of tiger's old swing and noticed that he used to take the club slightly outside. I was wondering, does he still do this now that he has flattened his swing, or does he take it more inside?

Thank You

Great question....for a time he did take it outside.

What he is trying to do now, when I watched it, didn't really impress me any.

ferris,

He does take it more inside now. But in 1996, he didn't take it back outside, that came later and is now gone.

He used to take the club back a little to the outside keeping a slight cup in the left wrist which he maintained to the top. That's actually a flat left wrist according to Yoda i think. He also used to let his right elbow fly resulting in a fairly high arm action.

He now takes it a little to the inside with a bowed left wrist which he maintains to the top.He keeps his right elbow more tucked in now resulting in a flattish arm plane at the top like Hogan.

On the downswing,I think he's now closer to the elbow plane than before.

Not sure what he's hoping to achieve but it looks like hes trying develop a natural draw.

With all due respect to all:

Tiger NEVER EVER EVER had ANYTHING but a perfectly FLAT LEFT wrist at the top.

Not a "visually" or "in the plane of the LAFW"....

nononono...

Just flat.

Brian,

He now has a absolutely flat left wrist with Haney. In 1996, he had a "cupped" looking left wrist at the top because of his strongish grip and more vertical shaft at the top.

i think joe is right, but once he started playing well, he did have a flat wrist at the the top, it is even one of the tips he gives in his book.

Baloney!!

Go get the Sports Illustrated Cover when he won the Masters that the headline reads:

Masterpiece

Tiger is playing the 18th, and his wrist is a flat as block of steel.

Butch days....remember?

I have a driver sequence BEFORE the 97 Masters. He pushes the club back low and wide with the left shoulder and then the club breaks upwards with a cupped looking left wrist and a cocked right wrist. He makes a big lateral move off the ball, and then a huge move back to the left.

Shouldn't flat be considered where ever the plane of the left wrist cock?
Strong grip would have the appearance of cupped left wrist but actually would be flat to the vertical left wrist cock.

My favorite pet peeve....

non-"Heat of Battle" pics.

He NEVER did it in a real TUNAmint!

Just how do you KNOW this is not a tournament swing? And, assuming for the moment that it isn't, why would he be making a swing in practice which he doesn't "really" use in competition?

That's what I'm saying - Brian is saying that it's literally flat, not only now, but always has been. In 96, it looked cupped exactly as you are saying. I saw Woods at the 96 Tour Championship.

tiger even said that before he used to have a strong grip and intentionally get stuck in order to produce alot of power because his hand-eye coordination was good enough so that he could time it perfectly to hit the ball well. I don't think tiger had the flat wrist until his swing overhaul of '98.
