tiger's takeaway

Give me a break, Playa.

I first videoed Tiger's swing when he was 15 years old and I was going to have dinner with him and Big Daddy Earl.

The dinner was at a mutual friends house that were the parents of the only black GIRL on the AGJA Tour at the time (Tiger being the only Black boy).

The girl's parents were trying to convince Earl to send Tiger to me for lessons, as Earl was teacher shopping at the time.

Anyhow, I went to the course and Videoed Tiger while he practiced for the AJGA event, just so I would have background for the dinner.

Tiger had to study and didn't make it, but Earl was there telling his siily made-up Tiger stories:

Tiger broke 50 at 4 or 40 at 6 or some other fantasy he dreamed up and convinced Tiger really happened (which was done with green baret skill and was BRILLIANT on his part, becuase the human brain DOES NOT know the difference between real and imagined).

So....Earl and I would not have worked out becuase HE WAS THE BOSS and when I teach, I AM. Plus I was even more coky than he and the kid put together (still am).

Too bad.

Anyway, the kid's left wrist was flat then and was UNTIL Butch's FIRST try at a re-do.

Tiger stunk it up and went back to flat....

and on his second shot into 18 today...his wrist was arched.

Take that playa.

Wow cool story Brian. You haven't mentioned anything about this before.

Man...so you and Earl did not get along well...ya he seems like a hard-ass. I'm bet now that if you knew how well Tiger would do you would have let him take charge and just go with it.

This part is interesting:

Tiger had to study and didn't make it, but Earl was there telling his siily made-up Tiger stories:

Ya that's a little far out...he's incredibly talented but I'd be skeptical of that too...at five he could probably barely wipe his own arse...
Why would Earl want Tiger to believe that though? To build his image of himself in his head? Kinda like when he says that "Let the legend grow" crap...?

What else did Earl do to "train" Tiger? Do you have any other insider stories?

Having spent 7 hours walking inside the ropes and close to Tiger at the Open at St George's . I think Earl taught Tiger to look at other human beings as sub-species . That was the impression he gave me . I was impressed with his talent but not his primadonna personality. He was pulling little stunts which IMO were designed to take his playing partners off their game. He really got to Luke Donald . I think that freak Earl taught him that stuff.

Just me or did Tiger look like he was in a hypnotic state today, walking behind Phil staring straight ahead etc etc.. Phil looked the opposite, relaxed and smiling.

I've only seen Tiger twice - at his first Tour event as a pro in Milwaukee way back when, and at last year's PGA Championship. I don't remember much from the first time since I was young, but last year at Whistling Straits he was looking hypnotized as well. Doesn't acknowledge anyone on the way from one green to another tee, doesn't look around, doesn't smile, doesn't nod to people yelling his name, doesn't say 'thanks' to someone telling him 'good putt.'

Just stares straight ahead or slightly downwards. Stays as far away from the crowd as possible at all times. Only crowd acknowledgement is maybe a little wave or tip of the hat if he makes a putt. I understand being poised and focused, but he's almost inhuman.

Brian, I'd be interested in any other stories you have. Some of the stuff you said above is very interesting.

Serious question.....why is a flat left wrist at the top sooooo important? What does it help or how does it help improve the quality of shots? Please explain the the uniformed (Me!) Thanks

a flat left wrist makes it much easier to square the clubface at impact. a bowed left wrist makes a cut/slice more likely. As far as tiger, I think we finally saw him focused like he was in 2000. That look on was face was almost saying that i want to crush you. When was the last time you saw tiger with that look. It has been awhile. However, i don't think earl taught him to look down on people. Having read a lot of books on tiger, and how he was brought up i find that hard to believe, plus tiger gives more money to charity than almost anyone else does, and most of the money he gives is kept secret, with the exception of the TW foundation. Also, did anyone notice that tiger was wearing that old school red color and old hat that he wore when he was dominating in 2000.......

You need a flat left wrist at impact. In fact,to be a really good iron player, you need an arched wrist.Hogan said that he felt the raised wrist bone point toward the target at impact. To get there from the top without hand action and timing you want the wrist to be flat or arched as well.Of course,if you have extremely good hands and can practise 8 hours a day like Hogan, then perhaps you can cup your left wrist at the top and flatten it to impact in the fraction of the second you have.

I'm guessing but perhaps with the added hand(wrist) action, you could potentially get more power with a cupped wrist, provided you are good enough.

I see Tiger generally as a good guy...but once he get in competition he does not screw around. His determination is great but I agree that he does come off looking too cocky/cold sometimes...he probably doesn't care though.

...and if he really does do things to bother people on the course, well that's just out of line...these guys are pros though and should know it is just a game- I don't think Luke Donald should let it get to him. If he is, he's just wasting his time...and that would just show you that maybe he really isn't good enough to compete with Tiger and the big boys.

Rarely do things always go your way...

Matt, I was at Whistling Straits too! Awesome course...not so good weather though...ugh.

Shouldn't flat be considered where ever the plane of the left wrist cock?
Strong grip would have the appearance of cupped left wrist but actually would be flat to the vertical left wrist cock.

I Think so too.

Homer didn't have a problem for swingers using double wrist cock because CF will align the clubface.
