Toed Shots

What are some causes?

Not a chronic problem but sometimes I get little stretches where I hit some shots off the toe.

Don't know if something is off in my address or if something is getting "shortened" in there or what.....

TOE.

No particular order...

#1. Swing too far to the left.

#2. Clubs are too flat.

#3. Attempt to "save" an open clubface "Hacker-style."

#4. Set-up too far from the ball to have your hips open and hit the inside of the ball as well.

#5. Left shoulder too far from the ball at impact.

Haven't you said before that players should aim to get their left shoulder as far from the ball as possible at impact?

http://www.brianmanzella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8127

Can you please clarify this a bit more, I too suffer from the toe shot or 3!

I did, I do, I resemble that remark!

But!

If your HIPS are not left enough, and they are very open, your left shoulder will be too far from the ball at impact.

Hmmm....

Okokok......that last post stands out the most Brian.....

Cause it usually comes on short game shots or any other time when I put my weight on my left side.

Last Sunday on the last hole I hit a bunch of drives. Going for a low little draw. Weight on left side some.

Hit the exact same toe shot 3 times in a row. Honestly...they were more or less exactly the same.

Hmmmmmm is right.....

...

BTW it's def. not 2, 3, or 4 on that list above.

Bman, in addition to the five options you listed, do you think it may be possible he has way too much knee flex at address and sometimes he comes out of that and cant reach he ball? in his video it looked as if he had quite a lot.

The toe shots are back..............ahhhhhh(ck)............

(hock loogey)

...

How do flat clubs play into it? I would have thought it to be the other way around.

Brian,
is there a differential between, "left shoulder as far from the ball" as opposed to "left shoulder as high as possible away from the ball (whilst still making contact, of course :))?"....

I had this problem like you wouldn't believe. I watched the Brian Manzella show where he answers questions posted on this board. Then I was cured. The tip that did is where Brian talks about putting your right shoulder in your front pocket. Seriously, night and day difference in my results now.

Right Shoulder....

Your RIGHT SHOULDER should go down, out and forward.

If it doesn't go down or forward enough, it could cause toe contact.

The "in your right pocket" idea, is something I would ponly tell to a golfer who has "roundhousing,' which is too much OUT right shoulder, without enough down or forward.

It is NEVER the knees, and NOBODY has the left shoulder too high....IF...

Your RIGHT SHOULDER goes down ENOUGH, out ENOUGH and forward ENOUGH.

But you CAN hit it off the toe for other reasons, like the ones I listed earlier.

Actually too flat and you'll hit in the heel and too upright and you'll hit on the toe. It's counter-intuitive but it is correct.

Jim, are you sure ? Either I miss something or Brian in his first post of this thread wrote that too flat clubs may be a culprit for toead shots...

Cheers

Yes, i'm sure.

If you put a ball on the ground and put a club behind it soled properly and then:

Brought the toe up in the air (too upright) the ball will become closer to the toe of the club and vice versa.

You're right, Jim. I checked it thoroughfully. Interestingly, it can sort of explain some of my heel shots after getting my irons flattened.

Cheers

I do get what I call "toe shanks" from time to time. Mine are caused by quitting and the subsequent chicken winging.

If my arms extend through properly the the both arms straight postion and I then do a good finish swivel I don't get this problem

I hope this is helpful

Man this is driving me nuts.

The ball generally goes straight and far when I hit it on the sweetspot but I'm missing it more than ever.

I'll even hit a few shots OFF THE GROOVES every round. GARRRRRRRRRrrrRRRRRrrRR. I even hit one the other day that almost MISSED the clubhead toe-side. (hit it on the FREAKIN toe-NAIL!!)

It doesn't seem to matter how I swing........toe shots like crazy ever since I've bent my posture over more. Direction and distance are great though if I hit it solid like I said. It's freakin maddening.

When I go out today I'll surely try a bunch of stuff........at this point I really don't know WHAT it is so I'll be tinkering a bunch no doubt.

WISH ME LUCK. GAHHAGRHAGRHRGKaout.

...

BTW Sean....I do seem to get it more when I quit (I really notice when I quit on a pitch shot) but man I seem to get it no matter how I swing. Full roll or angled hinge or flat or steep outside inside etc.

And my clubs ain't super upright either......they are standard. And I do think they are TOO upright but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be causing this.

We've talked about balance lately and it being overrated but this has only been happening since I've changed my posture.

I'm gonna try really making sure I stand a little closer to it today but it hasn't felt right up till now and I'm pretty sure I haven't been standing too far away from it anyway. And there's no way I should have to address the ball on the heel either and I don't want to do that.

Many clubmakers have told me that about 1* of lie angle off will move the contact point about 1/4" of an inch.
