My assessment is that misapplied, good information is ALMOST as detrimental as poor information.

Take anything that you hear or read with a grain of salt, as it may not fit you and your game. The truth is, some of the best golf information in the world just might make you worse.

If you're looking to perfect your own swing, make a concerted effort toward upgrading one swing component at a time. Use video--it doesn't lie. Get it right, then move on.

I'm a self-subscribed "tinkerer." But I'm working on my addiction and my game will thank me in the end.

Man Ryan......that is gold.

There are so many swing theories and tips out there it's beyond crazy. I had the "big ears" syndrome several years ago and it reeked havoc on my swing and my scores. Now when I hear the latest "can't miss" swing theory, I just ask myself, "What would Brian say about this"? As soon as I ask myself that question, I can hear Brian explaining why it's not worth a plug nickel for my swing. LOL!!

Working with Brian has really trimmed my hearing down a bunch...and boy, it's nice and quiet in my head now.

If you are trying to do something, and you are not getting better, you are absolutely trying to do the wrong things.

Most teachers would say you just need to keep working on it—and maybe 15+ years ago, I would say it as well.

Not now. I know better.

With Tracy, a hard working student, I tried to make a huge dent in a couple of things we both wanted to eliminate from his swing.

I was not comfortable with the attempt, but—trust me—only an idiot would say that WHAT we were working on were "bad things."

I'd day 90% of all teachers would have wanted to fix those items.

Well, they would be wrong and so was I.

I know EXACTLY what I will do in the next sessions, and I know this because I now what won't work.

Sometimes, that is just as important.

The pattern we were trying for, might be GREAT for Zach Johnson or Joe Piscopolous, but it isn't ideal for Tracy.

Brian,

Hummm....I'm not so sure Brian. I think that if I could see you more frequently, the changes would work. If I could take a 1 hour lesson every month, instead of 6 hours over 2 days, twice a year, surely the results would be better. Of course, this is not possible.

In other words, when left to my own devices for a few months, I screw it up :) I hate the idea of abandoning the backswing changes we worked on, they're starting to feel better. It seems I just can't "find the ball" consistantly from this new top of backswing position...

You said you've "bastardized" it tbarber...............have you started to over-do something(s)? I have gotten into that many-a-time.

No doubt.

My best student knows the BARE MINIMUM.

(On purpose. )

Bare minimum for doing what, exactly?

Playing as well as possible #1 obviously............what about self-diagnosing, etc?

Well, what I really meant was that I "probably have" bastardized it , even though I'm trying to do exactly what Brian and I worked on in October. If he magically walked up behind me on the driving range one day, I'm sure he would make some adjustments to my thinking...

This is what I'm afraid is happening to me, I'm misapplying Brian's good information...

Some students are better than others. I'm probably a poor student, but not because of a lack of trying...

This may not necessarily be true. You may have just "over cooked" the information :).

I saw Brian a few months back and less than a month later, I over cooked what essentially was (I believe) his soft draw pattern. Up until recently, I had been hitting hooks and blocks exclusively, not realizing that I STILL hadn't scaled back what he gave me in our lesson. After hitting a bunch of drivers off the deck (which forces me to do the OPPOSITE of what we worked on) I feel I'm on my way to controlling the ball again. And there's no doubt in my mind that Brian would have tried fixing this pretty much the same way (probably better), much sooner had I been able to see him.
