Toughest Question of the Year

Ok, here is a quick back story: Single digit player and reforming hooker who has fought BPS and the hosel for 3-4 years when I am playing bad. I have been to see Brian 2 times and have improved a lot, but I can’t shake these periods where BPS comes back. I have never been able to feel PP3…..that I know of.

My question: How do I learn to lag the sweetspot?

In my lessons and research here I have learned to get on plane and swing more left. That has helped. I know that BPS makes it easier to lag the hosel. I know that if I add tilt too early, I get under it. I know there are tour players that swing too far to the right and they hit great shots all the time because they lag the sweetspot almost every time. I play a straight ball now, but what if I wanted to play a big draw? I couldn’t because I have not learned to lag the sweetspot.

How can I learn to lag the sweetspot only, apart from all these conditions that are designed to help me do just that?

Sorry for the ramble. I just wanted to get all my thoughts on this out in the open. I really want to feel whatever that feel is and eliminate this crap from my game for good.

BTW, I have hit shots with the right thumb off drill.

There are teaching tools out there that can can help you feel/sense PP3. The one that I have used that works fairly well is the pure ball striker. Have you tryed the flying wedge drill where you do half swings withouth losing your flying wedge? I know BPS all to well, good luck eradicating it from your game!

I know these comments are of no help, but I am curious about some things.

I don't see how someone can be as good a player as you are, jbrunk, and not be aware of face/sweetspot and where it is during the swing and through contact. Really? You don't kind of either by feel or in your mind's eye keep some awareness of the part of the club you are going to hit the ball with? With most sports where you are going to hit something (like tennis or racquetball, for instance) you keep a feel in space/in your mind's eye for face of the racquet/club etc while you swing, right?

Secondly, just another observation, BPS is one of the few things talked about here regularly that I just have no concept. I understand intellectually being below plane, but I just don't understand how it causes the host of amazing problems described by very good players here. If anyone can explain this and what it really is and how it relates to sweetspot, I'd appreciate it.

Btw, jbrunk, doesn't the "carry" of the NHA2 downswing in the Soft Fade pattern move the club back above the plane for the downswing?

Niblick,

Since 2003, I have gone through these cycles where I play well for a month (mid 70’s) and then during one of these rounds I will lose the ‘feel’ and hit one off the heel but some how make it to the clubhouse in tact. That starts a 2-3 week period of terrible play (mid 80’s). Then I go back to work trying to fix it. I will fix it and start playing well again. Repeat.

I have pretty much ignored all the technical talk about pressure points and accumulators up until now. I want to start to feel PP3 all the time and that is why I am asking the questions the way I am.

The problem is shaft plane. Forget about it. The more you monitor shaft plane the more chance you have of losing the sweet spot feel. Shaft planes do not produce pure circular sweet spot movement.

You hit the ball on the sweet spot and not the shaft or the extension of the shaft which is the hosel.

Work on circular sweet spot movement (circular club head planes) with club face control (sweet spot balance) and you can hit any shot.
