I have had a go on one of those launch monitors today and I am curious to how my results compare to the top golfers. I have done a brief search and can not find out what the pros SS are. I know Els ,Mickelson, Tiger and Garcia's SS were in the mid to high 120s at The battle of the bridges but these guys are all long by tour standards. What is the average SS of the touring pros?

I've heard around 115 mph. But that pales in comparison to the typical FGI'er!

Yeah those guys have a 300 yard wedge...lol

I did a test when was about 14 or 15 and had it at 105mph was the best out the few swings I tried with the lil gizmo. At the time I could hit about 230 yards on my best shots. I wonder if my distance increase years on and how much it is striking the ball better vs faster swing speed from getting stronger as I've grown. Eventually when I make the swing changes and get married and over to be with my girlfriend, I might get custom clubs to my launch characteristics....

I think Tiger Woods swing speed is around the 120mph mark and think the real long drivers in contests have it about 170mph.

Also, we have to remember that it isnt just raw swing speed any more. It's all about the head loft and shaft combination which puts you in the correct launch angle. Matthew's teenaged swing speed was great, and with the right combination and launch angle, they could have cranked him up past that distance probably. How awesome would it be to have state of the art equipment at your disposal to dial in the right set up for you? That is also why I hate seeing people trying to compare players like Woods to Hogan, Jones etc. The equipment alone today is just leaps and bounds above what they played with. Then you get into the course conditions etc.

I doubt it. They once had a picth of Bob Feller's measured by throwing it alongside a speeding train. How accurate can that be?

All I know is when I was swinging as good as I ever did, my speed was about 105-109 consistantly.

I hit it pretty far, but mikestloc's 115 and Bartlett's 120+ made me look like (like Big Don Villavaso says) "A little gurl."

Brian,

Maybe your swing speed is better than you think it is. At what point in your swing was it measured? Prior to impact, impact, seperation, follow through....? Most amateurs develop as much speed as top professionals, however, they peak to early, causing tremendous slow down (decel) through impact (the ball slows down the clubhead even more). The more deceleration, the slower the seperation speed. You can actually have a slower approach speed and hit it farther, then most of your students, beause you have resistance to slow down (through proper impact alignments).
