Trackman vs. Flightscope

Just read on the TM site that they are suing FS for patent infringement.

"The lawsuit is based on MIA Sports Technology Ltd.'s sale of FlightScope's golf tracking radar model X2 with software version 5.8 and relates to the possible infringement of TrackMan's patent, EP 1 698 380 concerning a method for estimating a rotational velocity or spin frequency of a rotating sports ball in flight."

That is unfortunately 'normal' day business in the tech industry. Everyone is suing everyone else at the moment. Just have a look at what's going on with Google, Samsung and Apple.

I wouldn't be surprised if FlightScope is suing back for some other infringements. Flightscope's parent company EDH (EDH | Muzzle Velocity & Short-Range Ballistics Doppler Radar Specialists) has been around a while doing projectile tracking for military applications. I would be surprised if they don't have a pool of patents themselves.

Trackman vs. MIA Sports Technology

Interestingly, TM is actually suing MIA Sports Technology, a British company who are a lessor/integrator/distributor of Flightscope, V1 and Sam Puttlab, in a German court and not FlightScope themselves...

The European patent in question appears to be primarily related to determining the spin rate/spin axis of the golf ball without requiring alteration of the ball, typically with a relective metallic dot or stripe placed on the ball. It appears that there is an application but no approved US patent.

I don't know anything about how the global patent system works but I find it interesting that they are suing a distributor, and NOT the manufacturer, of the alleged patent infringing device.

Concerned X2 owner.

MIA Sports Technology & FlightScope (EDH) Dismiss TM A/S Patent Claim as Groundless

MIA Sports Technology Ltd and FlightScope (EDH LLC) Dismiss Trackman A/S Patent Claim as Groundless

Huddersfield, United Kingdom. 20 January 2012

Leading technology sales and marketing company MIA Sports Technology Ltd will be responding to a recently alleged German patent law suit brought by Trackman A/S.

The subject of the law suit is the sale and distribution of FlightScope technology in Germany. MIA Sports Technology Ltd, is the European distributor of the FlightScope brand and EDH LLC, are the true inventors and manufacturers of the original FlightScope technology. In a joint statement made by both companies, they stated a unified intent to oppose the law suit vigorously. Both companies believe the law suit to be without merit and will seek revocation of the patent.

Concerned X2 owner.
As a customer you don't have to worry. They won't take your x2 away.
If TM get an injunction they might be able to block the sale of the Flightscope in some countries and MIA might have to pay damages if they loose but that has nothing to do with you as a cust
omer. IANL

Thanks, I know. I am concerned as in:

1. interested or affected: concerned citizens.

not:

2. troubled or anxious: a concerned look.

I love my X2. :)
