Trevino swing

Brian: I'd love to see and hear you analyze a Trevino swing sequence.
I have not been able to find a clip on You Tube.
Thanks for the Palmer and Moe Norman analyses.

Brian,

Can you comment on the pros/cons of Trevino's strong double action grip and how it can affect your pattern? I think it's somewhere in 10-D? (at work right now not quite sure). More specifically, maybe an analysis on different release types based on this grip would be outstanding.

I've been itching to make a post about this grip but am still getting my info straight from the little yellow bible. Not quite grapsed everything yet :(

Recently, on the golf channel Lee talked about one of the flaws of most golfers, a strong to stronger grip.

His emphasis was on a weak grip (maybe neutral) that would allow for a release that adds more distance as opposesd to a turned motorcycle situation that inhibits its release and loss of distance...

Wait a second..........

I know we've all seen this picture a thousand times but doesn't this contradict what he was saying? Do as I say not as I do situation?

I guess I'm dying to know why this isn't the pattern: strong double action, that feel of little to no roll and (I guess) a snap release w/ tons of oomph.

I don't know enough about this yet to be able to quantify why a weaker grip w/ full roll and horizontal hinging is superior.

Calling the Manzellion.............

The club WANTS to close in a normal swing, the more you try to resist the harder it is to be consistent imo.

i know i have an easier time allowing the club to roll than not to roll

I just lose distance because Accumulator #3 - roll of left formarm is not working it's like a chip motion but with a driver - Angled Hinge.
I aim to the left side of the fairway for my push fade ball flight.(left side eliminated)
Plus it feels weird compare to roll the left forearm, you fight the centrifugal force.

Lee Trevino Video - Angled Hinge Compare

I played some of my best golf this summer w/ this grip - and virtually eliminated the left side of the golf course. The problem is I hate the left/right ball flight and I don't feel like I can "work it" at all anymore.

At the time I really had no idea what I was doing, just knew I was hittin it well. Driver distance was off the charts for me - irons about the same.

I know a more neutral grip w/ horizontal hinge action is superior, I just don't know the why or how yet.

While you lose distance with this grip (most people), you generally can gain more control of the face. Some folks hit it farther because it's the first time they are leaking and actually compress it. IMO

This is a great way to play a variety of shots. Why not use this grip for superior accuracy and control? Who says we can't change grips to suit the shot at hand?

There is one school of thought that strengthens the grip as you progress down the irons (due to the increased shaft angle at address)...:)

Trevino says that his swing is not powerful enough for today's game, which I semi disagree with. I mean what is Furyk's swing then. David Duval hit(s) it pretty far with a similar strong gripped late and limited release motion.

Like Lee says in that video, you are not going to be able to do his move unless you have a huge hip turn on the down swing.

Why do you think that? That sounds very rigid. I don't think that's necessarily true man. If you are knocking down pins it can't be all bad.

Agreed....

I think you have to take these kind of comments with a grain of salt even when they come from the pros themselves.

I mean.....dude won I think it was 8 majors and wasn't even a great putter apparently.....

He is being modest.

Of course you can hit it far with a strong grip. But Trevino not only had a strong grip but a holding off of the release move into the followthrough. He pretty much hit every shot as though it were a 3/4 knockdown wedge.
