when in the backswing does the wrist turned and how do they get into this position? do i have to think about it or should it be automatic?

There's more than one way to make a backswing....regarding clubface control by itself I mean.

But if you have a startup Swivel it is more or less right away.

Practice it until it's second nature.

I remember having a hard time trusting that move.....you learn to trust it when you learn it works.

I may be wrong but it seems that two basic methods of getting to the top of backswing can be :-

1. Begin the backswing with conscious turn of left hand "to the plane" and then don't turn it past the plane angle. This is TGM "standard wrist action" or startup swivel. add wrist cock/bent right elbow and turn and you are at the top.

2. Do the Manzella "twistaway" and you don't need to consciously turn the left wrist to the plane but by the time you get to the top of the backswing you find that that the left wrist has BEEN turned. This is TGM single wrist action - I think, maybe...

A lot of TGM newbies who first learn about the Startup Swivel (or Standard Wrist Action) over do it, i.e. they Turn their wrist too much causing Clubshaft to point outside the Plane Line.

What is the Manzella "twistaway"?

ok i think i am getting closer to understanding the twist away and the left wrist cock and right wrist bend-(i think)- now can someone tell me where or when in the backswing the right elbow bends and the right wrist bends backwards and left wrist cocks?

When it needs to! You can only twistaway so far! In the backstroke it will feel that your right ( assuming you right handed!) palm faces the floor and then as your shoulders rotate you feel like your right palm faces the video camera which would be filmimg your down the line view with your local PGA pro! Feels odd initially. Remember this is a way of correcting an open clubface ( part of brian's "never slice again" series - only do it if you have an open clubface problem!)

It is all achieved by keeping right wrist level and bending it!! There is no "turn" to the plane consciously performed but by the top of backstroke right wrist will be flat or even mildly arched.

It works for slicers.

remember do it on plane too.

read Dante's 4 magic moves book. He sort of says the same but does not explain it the way Brian does - Dante gets an immediate wrist break but a similar wrist action - early arching left wrist which by top of backstroke keeps clubFACE in good alignment

Brian will always fix your clubface first if your shot pattern needs it!

I say this having read alot of Brian but never met him...yet. Planning a big trip some day when New Orleans a bit cooler... An English chap in the deep south in June!! far too hot for me!

right now i am having trouble with a double left wrist cock and a closed clubface when i hit the ball. i am working on keeping the wrist level and it has helped but i do not understand when the back of the left wrist starts to be parallel to the line of flight. sorry if i am a little slow on this but i would like to understand a little better. i also do not understand the magic of the forearm or whatever it is called.

The problem with a start up swivel is most golfers don't understand that:

1) how it works
2) when to ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN
3) they try to MAKE IT HAPPEN

A start up swivel should naturally occur because you are bent over and letting your arms "swing from the shoulder sockets" ;). Most people don't realize it will happen naturally and thus TRY to have one and end up over rolled and off plane as Tong pointed out.

Exactly man. It just happens if you let it.

You have to learn how do do it right...and learn how to trust it....which can be hard at first.

Second nature after a while tho.

From address position draw the club head straight back and away from the ball until your left arm is parallel to the target line and horizontal to the ground. Then bend your right arm at the elbow and raised this whole assembly up and in whilst drawing your left shoulder around and under your chin AS YOUR TRACE THE TARGET LINE WITH THE BUTT END OF YOUR CLUB.

Its that simple.

so i do not bend my right elbow until my left arm is parallel to the target line-is that right?
