Two Patterns, please comment

Strive for power and accuracy!

What happens when you try to max out the short pattern? (or lengthen it...or not worry about "sync" at the top)

I like the float load!

Can't really comment beyond saying you of course should be results-oriented in your choosing.

The short one I'm guessing is somewhat of an attempt at Hogan. (or sfixer)

There must be a way for you to take a rip without adding loft. Some way to add forward lean. I am thinking downswing pivot stuff mostly.

Tong,

I've watched your swings over the years, and you've always been an open-faced player, someone with a lot of active release in the hitting area.

That type of clubface action is just not compatible (on the golf course) with the shorter backswing and quick tempo. You need more time to close that clubface without all the "flash" down at the bottom.

You'd be better off copying Ben Curtis or Geoff Ogilvy than Anthony Kim. Just my two cents.

Do you think the clubface is open here?

Doesn't make a huge difference if I max out on the short pattern because I'm swinging quite fast already. But with the long pattern it makes a bigger difference. I agree with you about results, but sometimes it's not that simple.

What's the dilemma then? (if there is any at all) I guess you are not hitting it noticeably better with one pattern?

They both look good. (BTW that is not me doubting your ability)

Which is more versatile with hitting shots? Which has better misses?

Does it work well to shorten the longer one when you want more accuracy?

They obviously both look good.

I would be interested to know if one or the other has better course results:

-Distance control when you're between clubs.
-What feels better when you have uneven lies.
-What works better from the rough or bad lies.
-Which swing allow you to work the ball better.

I think these things are the difference between range and course results.

I'll chime in now.

I would HATE the short pattern if you payed all your shots with it.

Silly.

I like your long pattern better. Much Better.

You see, if you know what you are doing, YOU NEVER SHIRNK A PATERN!!!

Time does a much better job of it.

I have no problem with shorter patterns, including this one, to play certain types of shots.

You should swing as long as you can, and swing well.

Period.

This ain't Putt-Putt.

I'm hitting it better with the long one. I did this thread to hear what you guys think. People like what they are trained to see, and if they are taught about about short=more accurate they will prefer the short swing.

Long is a bit more versatile and more consistent. Regarding misses, I cannot comment yet because I need more time tweaking my setup/ball position/tilt, etc.

NO NO NO NO NO! If I use a wedge then the swing naturally shortens itself. But whenever I consciously try to shorten it I hit poor quality shots. It works much better if I try to hit it softer, which will indirectly shorten my stroke.

I'm late to this thread, and Brian has already weighed in.

But before I read the comments I watched the swings, and I liked the long pattern much better. I was thinking about how to put it, and here's what I came up with.

If I stepped onto the first tee in a big match I'd be a LOT MORE WORRIED if I saw the long pattern. Both are very good swings, but the guy with that long fluid rhythm and that great float load - that guy's got game, and I'd be worried. I've seen a lot of folks with the shorter pattern who just couldn't hit a shot under pressure to save their life.

I don't have a swing to brag about, but I've played a LOT of competitive golf...
