Under plane

I've realized I have a cyclical pattern.

1) I'll be underplane and hit terrible shanks for a week. I'll be swinging way too far towards right field.
2) I'll figure that out eventually
3) I'll start striking the ball really well for about a month
4) Repeat

How can I lick this under plane thing for good? I'm tired of having a mini meltdown every month or so. I had my best 18 ever this past weekend, now I'm having trouble getting the ball airborne.

I had this problem a while back..
For me the answer was pretty simple..less "right shoulder under" on the downswing...I mentally told myself to swing my right shoulder AROUND slightly more, rather than down from the top (but keep the head back, no sliding)....a complete contradiction to what most people need...

I struggle with the same problem. I can go from playing my best golf to hitting it terrible in a matter of a week. I think there is a fine line from puring it coming from the inside, and dipping the right shoulder too low. I usually find that trying harder to keep my posture a little bit in the downswing helps. Also overaccereration is another cause for me, so I also really focus on even tempo during the swing.

Try the NHA video...it also helps a lot from getting to much under plane.

Thanks guys

Just bought The Movie (I now own the full set!). Upon working at it a little bit more, it became obvious to me that I was just yanking the club behind me right after takeaway. To keep a more normal plane, I'm pretending that both ends of the clubs have lasers (like a smart stik) and drawing a straight line.

"Below Plane Syndrome

You try to swing down and out to the inside corner....

You beat your slice add a little swivel and finally shoot in the 80's

You continue doing what you are doing - directing the club out to right field

You shoot under 80 for the first time......

You keep at -- start to develop some push and pulls -- iron play becomes erratic

You think you need stiffer clubs

A good round could be good and a bad round awful - makes you want to take up badmitton

You start hooking and pushing drivers, you see hits off the toe and off the heel -- You start to think that you are not going inside enough -- down and out more to equal the forward.........

You end up with a wedge game with no spin and a Lie / loft machine at your bedside"

WOW.. Me too a tee! (Except the 70s part). Back to working on my straight plane line. This forum is great.
