Under plane

I have a tendency to push the longer clubs, even the shorter ones on bad days. I'm told this is most likely from being under plane. What exactly does this mean? Is there a way to verify this without someone else watching? What is the main reason for getting in this position? Posture? Too far from the inside? Other? Is there a feeling for being on the correct plane? And of course, best way to correct? Plane board not a good option.

Thanks for your help, John

Think of it this way- on a straight shot, where your body is parallel with the target line.....the target line is basically your plane line.....basically.

If you're shaft (either end- during the takeaway and coming into Impact it's obviously the clubhead end) is POINTING AT the line you are on plane.

If you actually did that wouldn't you shank the ball since the hosel is on the end of the clubshaft?

Put a rolled folded towel under the shaft at address with about a 1 inch gap. Make sure the towel is parallel to the plane line.

Don't hit it.

Report back.

My report: Tried without a ball at first and of course hit the towel. Discovered that I could only miss the towel by raising my right shoulder on the backswing and keeping it high thru the swing. Felt over the top and a bit strange. Took it to the range and immediately hit a lot of pulls with all clubs. Eventually straightened it out. My successful result is to focus on keeping the right shoulder high at backstroke and retarding that shoulder on the downswing. It feels like the arms go first and then the shoulders which I gather is hitting. Pretty good results. Can still push driver if I get lazy and drop the right shoulder. Am I on the right track or just ingraining different faults? Thanks for all your help.
