It's like he forgot he was set up to play a fade:)

I think this is the simplest explanation and i agree with it; essentially it appeared he was setup for a fade but swing too inside out. When you do that you'll shank or thin it really bad every time.

Here's an example:

Ever try to hit a open face/open stance flop shot or big high pitch and then proceed to shank or thin it? It's because you rotated the plane line open but didn't swing that way thus face was somewhere it wasn't supposed to be.

Nope - I have NEVER done that...

I have been plagued with the shanks in the past, one thing that helps is making sure I am not too open, stand as close to the ball as i can and swing the club with the clubace pointing to the ground (this is a feel). With an open stance, it really seems to encourage my left arm to over rotate.

True there's not enough tumble, but there is not enough TIME to tumble me thinks. He is seriously under turned.

This is a very important point!

If you make a shortish backswing, where you hands do not go back enough to go back toward the target, you have to tumble right out of the backswing.

You are already in phase 2!

What would have happened if he had more gamma-ed in phase III, bossman?

A late gamma can save a shank—but not always.

All you need is a unwind+tilt that pulls on the under tumble a bit, and all the King's horses and all the King's men....

Ok Jim, Give me your Webb Simpson no shank lesson. What would you show and say to him based on that Ryder Cup shank.

1st thing i'd tell him is this, "you want me to fix that or you ok with the random shank?"

Pros are finicky animals, the less information in most cases (based on people i know who have work with high level golfers) the better. These are guys who have honed their game to get to the highest level. Few want to mess with it that much; guys like Tiger, Sean O'hair who are always tinkering are the exception.
