One other very important point. You need to know how far the ball will roll with different lenght shots and with different clubs. This way you will be able to pick a landing spot for each particual shot.

Very true, and of course the slope as well. I've hand "great" shots land 3 feet from the hole only to keep rolling due to the slope. :(

TMI (too much info):) Way too many variables to "know" the roll of the ball to any useful degree. Mainly because hole location will determine the landing area, and the landing area (uphill, downhill, sidehill, fringe, etc) will play a huge part in what the ball does after it hits. KNOW your carries, then play with feel for the ball's reaction.
