What a 295 yard draw in the right center of the fairway looks like

This is a picture of my long-time student Adam Mallory playing the 10th hole at Pebble Beach last week with me.

It is an important picture for several reasons:

1. Showing HOW LITTLE to the right a good golfer actually swings.
This is a swing where Adam swung down the yellow line (his plane line) and had the clubface basically at the white house in the distance. The drawn shot followed the pink dots 295 down the right center.

There are goofy ideas out there about swinging down sone silly imaginary line out to right field. The idea is SOOOOOoooooo over taught that golfers swing so far to the right they can't get the long irons and fairway woods AIRbourne.

2. On Plane Shoulders

3. Hip, Hands, Clubhead sequence through impact

4. Imagine how far left it would be for a 10 yard cut like yours truly!

Brian,
Isn't the yellow line the right frearm angle of approach? If it was the plane line the ball would have ended up in the rocks even with a draw.

HD2?

are these frame overlays from footage shot with your sanyo vpc-hd2? do you remember what shutter speed you were using - very impressive virtually non-blur image capture of high speed action ...

He's a lucky guy to have had you for a coach for so long. This picture is awesome. I have never seen an analysis like this from a still frame photo. Looking forward to meeting you (hopefully) in Michegan Brian.

What is the Manzella definition of a draw? I was always under the assumption that a draw basically went down the target line and tailed off to the left a little bit. In this picture it looks like the pink dots take off left of the target line almost immediately. I am asking because maybe when I think I am pulling it I am actually drawing it???

I went to Different Strokes in Louisville alot last year and frequently saw Adam hitting balls on the range.
I usually had to move a couple blocks down or be on his right, so I didn't have to look at his swing while I tried to sort mine out. ;)
Great looking swing!

Absolutely, Not!

Brian,
Isn't the yellow line the right forearm angle of approach? If it was the plane line the ball would have ended up in the rocks even with a draw.

No, it isn't.

"If it was the plane line the ball would have ended up in the rocks even with a draw."

No, it wouldn't.

The ball STARTS nearly where the FACE IS, it curves AWAY from the "divergent" plane line.

I just don't understand how many times we have to go over this.

His ball seems to draw even before it reaches the apex of it's trajectory.

If I tried that, it would duck hook every time.

What's he doing that I'm not?

Brian,

I'm curious what your view is on his follow through when he straightens his right wrist and bends his left severly. Is this a personal thing of his or does it have a purpose? Thanks and see you in next week.

Yes!

...when he straightens his right wrist and bends his left severly. Is this a personal thing of his or does it have a purpose?

It has a big purpose.

It keeps the club from closing too fast. It also allows for uniform face-to-plane rotation, and all that finish he has. :)

Does Adam have a hint of twistaway in his backswing Brian? The other thing that i notice is his shoulders stop turning early on the backswing, well before finish. This would show his main backswing thought isn't entirely the big body controlled turn ala Faldo etc?

Beautiful! I'm going to put up some images to show how dynamic and powerful Adam's squat is. Brian, did Adam have this naturally or did you use the "puppy dog" drill with him?

Brian,

Could you clarify? Thanks.
