What a 295 yard draw in the right center of the fairway looks like

Does Adam have a hint of twistaway in his backswing Brian? The other thing that i notice is his shoulders stop turning early on the backswing, well before finish. This would show his main backswing thought isn't entirely the big body controlled turn ala Faldo etc?

Yes I was looking at that too. He *seems* to take the club to the inside quite early with a pronounced hip movement and then use forearm rotation in the second half of his backswing to take his arms to the top?

Looking again his right arm stays tucked in close to the body for the first 3/4 of the backswing -- perhaps thats why it looks so inside?

Good swing, but...

Why is he playing a draw on that hole? Better yet, if he doesn't fade the ball, then wouldn't he be smarter to start the ball down the right side of the fairway and draw it to the left side? Starting it out along the cliff and drawing it back is risky especially if he the ball comes off dead straight.

Dude, relax. Kid shoots 77 and probably left some shots out there. Btw, this was at Pebble freakin' Beach.

It was just a question...

I've heard some say that you want to work the ball away from trouble - which is what he did, although I was arguing that he started it over/toward trouble and therefore risky. Others argue that you shape your shot according to the hole (i.e dogleg right - like #10 - you play a fade).

More than one way to get er done.

You can assume he's comfortable with a draw (or crazy)....you can also prolly assume there's a wind coming in from the ocean, no? (draw-enhancer)

Everyone calm down, it's a reliable question.

VTPlayer, if he plays a consistent draw then it's a no brainer. If you consistently draw the ball 8/10 balls that's your "shot shape." Also he isn't starting the ball out over the cliffs as much he's just AIMED there. Notice the ball is already drawing back into the fairway

I am currently hitting fade off the tee myself.

I can hit ANY shot you want, no problem, but I SCORE better—esp. under pressure—with the left-tp-right ball flight.

I hit 10 of 14 fairways at Pebble from the tips, about 280 avg. with the driver.

I missed #1 with a hybrid by a yard. Hit in in the faiway bunker on purpose on #6 (trying to roll it through a rock hard bunker on a reachable par 5), hit it two yards left on #13, and dead straight a hair too far on the line I wanted on #16 in a fairway bunker (made par anyhoo).

Not bad for a teacher.

Anyhoo, what's the point?

I started my tee shot on #18 DEAD OVER THE WATER. It wound up dead center. It was MORE CONFORTABLE for me to do that.

Adam was simply doing the saem thing on that tee shot. He hit more fairways then I did, and averaged about 290. :)

Brian, it seems to me that Adam's pattern is clearly right-of-center on the Manzella Matrix.

Do you guys work on anything specific to keep him from getting too much in draw/hook mode.

Here is a more representative version of Adam's pattern.

I included the draw to make some "points." ;)

Here is an iron from Oak Quarry in Riverside, CA

(It finished about 4 feet right of the hole).

Please no more videos of Adam's swing! If its not his lovely swing making me jealous its the golf courses he is playing!

One point i'd like clarifying please - Adam has a bit of dip in the downswing - not so unlike Tigers to my unqualified eye. I have seen here and on other forums, Tiger's dip attacked as a bad thing in his swing. Is it something you work on with Adam or is his dip acceptable?

I never said that Tiger's dip was a "bad" thing, just that he'd do it less if his head was more down at address.

At some point with every student, I try to get their head in the "Nicklaus-like" position, but, if it doesn'r stick, or makes things worse, I don't mess with it anymore.

With Adam, like most of my good players, I focus on more importan t things.

Like what the club is doing:

#1 The Most important Thing.

or

# 2. The Pivot as it influences #1

:)
