Is it sticking to a certain pattern? Is it favoring a type of ball flight? Is it just practicing alot? Just curious. I have no secret nor any real cosistency. Walt

Obviously there's alot more to it, and its not a sexy answer, but a sound grip, aim and ball position are crucial to consistency. Throw in a good rythym for good measure.

imo consistency = clubface control 80% and clubpath control (plane) is the other 20%. You can't play consistent golf if your clubface is all over the place. Even most hackers clubpath becomes consistent and doesn't vary much which is why i put such a low percentage on it.

While i 100% agree with kevin on all his points, if you can't find a way to control the face you are going to have a long day on the golf course

Grip.
Posture.
Alignment.
Ball position.

All set through a routine.

Soft shoulders, arms, wrists and hands.
It feels weak but forces the big muscles to control the swing.

Moving the triangle created by the arms and shoulders on plane (up to the point where the clubshaft is parallel to the ground) and controlled by the pace of the torso.

After that there isn't a whole lot of thinking except to get to the finish position.

I do work on shortening the backswing, keeping the right hand as far from my right shoulder as possible... but that's a personal thing... the fight against my Achilles Heel.

for me, that is the only key i try and focus on ...

without that in my swing, i play terrible... i play terrible with it, but unbearable without it ... :D

FLW at impact and footwork. Obviously, I have my feels to get that flw at impact, so just saying keeping your left wrist flat at impact really doesn't describe it well. But a FLW at impact = consistency for me. Very tough for me to shoot a big score or to spray the ball with a FLW at impact.

Good footwork gives me good balance and for me balance and rhythm go hand in hand. It also correlates to my pivot action, so good footwork equates to good pivot action for me.

Not getting quick from the top always seems to work for me. You may still not hit it perfect, but it seems to eliminated the wild hook or push.

You just have to learn to boil the golf stroke down to its simpliest form.

The problem is that by the time you get to this point, chances are that all your passion for golf will have disappeared.

Well, it depends on what sort of consistency you are talking about. It is impact consistency, ball flight or scoring? I would dare say that the game of golf is about all parts that includes impact, ball flight and the ability to hole the putt as well.

Just letting of steam a bit as I had a good driving and fairway impact day on the golf course yesterday but my short game was nowhere to be seen. Pounded a driver and a 4 hybrid a total of 460 metres into a 475 metres par 5 and ended up with a bogey. :(

My ball flight was pretty consistent on the longer clubs with most of them a soft draw and one or two really big hooking draw but did not went OB or lost ball at all throughout the day.

Would have scored much better if not for my lack of chipping and putting abilities.

Therefore consistency needs to apply to all aspects and not just one or two thoughts. Would you guys agree?

As in anything that you are trying to become great at....it's called DELIBERATE PRACTICE. You practice the correct things with intense focus for many years and for alot of hours..its how you become consistent, or excellent at anything. BTW..this kind of practice is NOT always fun.

So dead on.

Go to the range and 9 out of 10 golfers on a range will have absolutely no focus as to what they are doing. Many don't even aim at a target. Just step up to the ball and whale away at it. Some sports you may get away with that type of practice to a degree, but in golf it's very crucial to practice with focus. Like Lombardi said, 'practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.'

Cool to see you understand it, many people playing for years and years never do.

Fabulous comment! I have been working really hard this year on my game and hit LOTS of balls most everyday and as of late have been wondering if I really want to pour this much into a game I love because it is starting to turn into a job. Maybe shooting 80 isn't such a bad thing after all.

I've understood this for a very long time, because of my background in music. Sometimes the hard part is figuring out WHAT to practice, especially in golf, not as much in music. Most people have absolutely no clue..I'm trying to figure out exactly what to practice in my full swing right now. Deliberate practice is the most important thing anyone on this website, or anywhere MUST understand how to do and learn to do, some people would call it INTENSE focus while practicing. Intense means you CANNOT do it all day. Studies have found that this kind of practice can only be performed for a MAXIMUM of 5 hours a day, and that is by the most intense individuals that understand this concept. For MOST of us...3 hours max, this kind of practice is broken up in sessions, and usually with a nap thrown in the middle of the day. Think about that one, when your at the range next time.

How about practice or play almost everyday. I know plenty of people that PLAY everyday but STINK. They do the same stinking thing day in and day out. Time for an Einstein quote...

Well if they do the same stinking thing day in day out that's being consistent:D

This pretty much holds true for learning ANY skill, and few skills are harder to grasp than the golf swing! Average players would be MUCH better off going to the driving range every day / every other day and hitting 25 balls with an idea in mind and fully focused, rather than going 1 or 2 times a week and just hitting balls. I also believe it's better physically on the body as well. When you lose focus, technique gets sloppy, and that's a good time for an injury to occur. Plus the sloppy technique can become a habit, and you end up as bad, if not worse, than you were before:eek:
