Both are needed

I think you need both teachers and coaches, the best have the ability to do both.

I think of my own lilfe...when I teach Economics during the day, I come up with a lot of real life stories and examples that make the understanding of supply and demand curves relevant.

On the basketball court in practice later it is different. I expect certain things and I try to implement things that are relevant to one thing...us winning. Coaching golf is a bit different as it is a mix of the previous two, but in the end both abilities are needed in golf.

Teachers and Coaches

BM,

In a well ordered world aren't these functions complimentary rather than exclusive?

A Teacher gets the mechanical/physical/theoretical, w.h.y, concepts of a subject into the pupils noddle, whilst a Coach (or the extention of a sound Teaching Practitioner's mandate - switch to Coaching mode) then gets the pupil to perform as those concepts require.

Isn't THIS your forte?

Coach:

In sports, a coach is an individual involved in the direction and instruction of the on-field operations of an athletic team or of individual athletes. Coaching entails the application of sport tactics and strategies during the game or contest itself, and usually entails substitution of players and other such actions as needed. Most coaches are former participants in the sports in which they are involved, and those who are not have usually had extensive training in the sport in question.

Teacher:

Used in the most generic sense of the term to indicate the person who has the main responsibility for providing the educational content. The teacher may use a variety of teaching and learning methods at a variety of levels to a variety of target audiences. The term teacher incorporates the term lecturer.

It really depends on what your own personal defintion of teacher/coach means. Just like Louber (i think) and i had a small debate on whether or not i was "unique" in my teaching.

I used the word unique as "rare or different than most" and Loubert's definition of unique was "only one."

So again depends on your interpretation and your own personal definition.

A "teacher" is someone who can GET a student who doesn't KNOW something to KNOW IT
or can't DO something to DO IT.

A "coach" is someone who takes someone who already KNOWS something to be able to PROVE it in a "testing" environment, or gets someone who can already DO IT to DO IT under the gun.

Haney - Teacher
Rotella - Coach

Some "Golf Instructors" are just teachers, some are really just coaches. Some teach so-so, but coach like mad and the students win tournaments anyway.

Someone who TELLS you WHAT the Capital of every state is, and tells you to go read chapter 10 and study hard—and that's all—might have the title of "Teacher," but what they really are is a lecturer.

The person who can get you to UNDERSTAND why there ARE Capitals in every state and help you LEARN ALL OF THEM by telling stories that bring the states and their important cities to life so you really LEARN SOMETHING is—in my opinion—a REAL teacher.

A coach is the guy with a whistle and a chew of tobacco yellin':

"Damn Manzellee. You hit 'em with your purse."

I can see that.

So a guy like Penick would be a coach then I guess eh.

More of an "inspitational" kind of guy as I take it.

I dunno if I can fully judge....but also kinda overrated IMO.....never taught mechanics from what I know....seems to be scared of ruining his students.....(prolly cause a lot of guys do ruin ppl.....but they just don't know enough about it.....including him apparently)...

...

Side question.....

Brian....

When was the last time you ruinied someone and couldn't fix em....? (or improve em beyond how they were already playing b4 they came to you)

Based on the apparent misinterpretation of other posters in that thread, I simply suggested how you might modify your usage to something less ambiguous. ;)
