What to look for in a swing video?

Hey guys,

I just got myself a casio ex f1. Gonna try capture some videos of my swing out on the range. What are some of the most important (ie fundamental) and subtle things to look for to the untrained eye?

Thanks,

This is a very, very vague question because it really depends on a number of things.

A single digit handicap golfer will be looking at completely different things to fix vs someone who can't break 110 regularly.

You probably need to post your swing and/or describe your misses and and we can fill you in. Brian has always advocated fixing the face and it's common to look at the grip at the address position and where the face is on the backswing, at the top, on the way down and at impact. If you've seen Never Slice Again, the Twistaway concept is there to 'dis-allow' the opening of the face at almost any time of the swing. Often the student makes many compensations based on the how open/closed the face is.

Every golfer has their own issues, so the advice you are going to get is what has ailed another player in the past. That may, or may not help you. I suppose instruction would be a lot easier if we all made the same mistakes, but this isn't the case.

I think it's different from golfer to golfer. For me, I try to look at a few of the things I've been working on. Generally it comes down to 3 categories:

1. Doing what I've been working on.
2. Not doing what I've been working on, but progress being made.
3. Not even close to doing what I've been working on.

I also keep an eye out for stuff that I've worked on in the past and make sure that I'm not creeping back into an old habit. For instance, a couple of weeks ago I was working on something with my downswing and found myself getting very laid off in the backswing. So I made the choice of working on not getting laid off and then go back to what I was working on in the downswing.

I know when I first got my Casio I was so enamored with all of the new stuff I was reading here like lct, float loading, and tumble, that I never really checked my grip, alignment, posture, et. al.

Camera

I've found the most success when I've used the camera while I'm practicing - that is look at the swing, then change the swing - feel the difference, then look at the "new" swing and see if it matches what you think you are doing.

In contrast, sometimes people take the video, then go home and look at it, come back the next day or week and repeat that process. The instant feedback regarding the visual and the feel - is very important in regards to proper use of your camera.

What you're looking for has to have something to do with what the ball is doing. I always try to get some ball flight tendencies before I look for swing issues of any kind. Fundamentals are a little different for everybody in that you're trying to match up YOUR components to "zero out" your move so to speak.
