Why Greg Norman didn't win more Majors (apparently)...

Norman CAN play in the wind

If you think Greg Norman cannot play in the wind I suggest finding copies of his British Open wins and all the others he contended in. In 86 there was near gale force winds.

Isn't that the beauty of the game?

Really.... isn't this the kind of stuff that makes golf the great game that it is?
Norman... a tragic figure of sorts who had a couple of majors absolutely stolen via one-in-a-million shots by an opponent? And then he has the Masters in hand (his most coveted tournament) only to implode on Sunday?

I think about Nicklaus' win in 86, Crenshaw's win later at Augusta (with his caddy holding him like a baby after the final putt, the week of his golf mentor's death), Tiger's US amateur wins (all when he was behind the 8-ball). Even El Tigre's Jr Am wins seemed to be from the depths of defeat. Hell, I just played in a 2-day amateur event in Illinois where my best friend is the local golf hero. He got into a driving funk where he absolutely coudn't hit a fairway unless it was 2 fairways to the right..... I mean you couldn't MAKE yourself hit it that far right, but for over 10 years he had to deal with it (a driver yip of sorts). He somehow works thru it and wins this event last week..... the 20 year anniversary of his last win there.... beating his brother in a 3 hole sudden death playoff..... on Fathers Day!!!!

Forget swing changes and tweaks.....I don't think we give the Golf Gods enough credit.

anyone who thinks norman couldnt play in the wind they havnt been watching Tv for the last 3 days. todays the wind got up to 40+ mph, and he shot, what IMO, was a 2/3 under round of 72

Norman didn't seem to "have all the shots." Who am I to judge a guy who could wax me on the course. He was a great driver of the ball and a really good putter. Didn't seem to get too creative with the trajectory on his irons. Every shot seemed high and spinning, even when the wind was blowing. Tiger was this way as an Am and early Pro. Now, Tiger uses all kinds of trajectory and shaping to his benefit.

Norman seemed like a big sweep realeaser. Great for the tee ball, but not so good for the crafty iron shots.

i don't think much needs to be said here. i know greg is getting on a bit but his 120 yard five irons must come into the category of genius shot making. i'm pretty sure they're not very high or full. they do bite though. if you've enjoyed this week please try and find a copy of 86.

Norman's game.

I'm sorry I ruffled all the feathers of the Norman fans out there (not really). I'm a Norman fan too. I still stand by my opinion about WHY HE DIDN'T WIN MORE MAJORS.... let's face it, he's one of the top players of all time. In his day he drove it great and putted great (usually) and if he had a weakness it was his control with his irons.

He hit the ball poorly today and based on only hitting 5 greens in regulation, lost the magic with the putter as well. His knock down, or half shots, had a staccato, hurried look that I don't see with Els, Woods, Paddy, etc.

I wanted him to win sooooo bad, but he didn't bring the good stuff with him today. Paddy sure did. Poulter too. Sergio sucked and if AK could have putted he would have won by 10 strokes.

Oh and BTW....It's easy for me at sit at a computer and pick apart a guys game who could beat me if I made him play with three clubs. So I'm not "dissing" Greg, I'm just calling it like I see it.

Just one stat you missed out cm.....Greg has hardly picked up a club in the last 10 years.....I wonder how the others guys would have perfomed under the same circumstances?.....:)

he did hit 5 greens but he also only hit 5 fairways so that's a pretty good conversion with the irons. unlike the other days his drives were ending up in fairway bunkers and further left than the first 3 so i'd say it was his driver that cost him. i think his irons got him to the lead with birdies that others weren't making. especially since there are only 2 par 5s at RB.
