This thread is really silly.

Tongzilla, why don't you say something other than a worthless ambiguous statement in your original post. People are not psychic.

The transitions (technique wise) of Tiger and Ernie Els are very similar. They don't "need" to do anything tempo wise. The just chose a tempo.

I respectfully disagree, Chris.

Some patterns NEED sudden speed. Some don't.

Period. Fact. End of story.

Now, to me, this thread is about the FACTORS in those patterns....

Silly?

Nah.

They "look" smooth to you, because what you are judging as smooth, is arm speed relative to pivot.
Hacker will always look like he swings hard because he makes little or no pivot to relate to his arm swing.
Good players "look" smooth because they pivot much, much earlier and quicker and the arms , because they lag behind look like they are swinging slower.
As Brian says "the ball aint know shit".
Lil Don...OUT

Not all good players look smooth. You could never say Price looked smooth.

Anyhow, growing up I used to always think swinging smooth meant swinging easy, I was wrong. Transition speed is the big factor when it comes to how smooth a swing looks....a hitter has to start down hard, and as such they rarely look smooth. Someone like Els is a bit slower in transition then pours the power on during the downswing, aesthetically it is more pleasing to my eye than an instant acceleration from the top, but that don't make it better.

Actually Price does look smooth. albeit fast...you try swinging at that speed.....

Just one observation - when is the last time you saw someone who was shorter than average, with very short arms, who was not that flexible and with very wide shoulders who you thought was a "smooth swinger" like Els? I think some of the optics of smoothness no doubt come from great mechanics, but some come from the visual effect of long arms moving a good distance around a relatively "smaller" pivot connection (shoulders).
