Why is stumpy Toms so long?

At the Open I watched a bit of Toms playing with Els. Although Els was longer he was not that much longer than stumpy David Toms. Toms looks about 5 8 1/2" to me and I think he wears a visor so his hair stands up to make him look taller. I was really impressed with his game and was amazed at the power he generated with his simple looking swing. During the practice days he played in a group with Janzen, Crane, and Lehman much bigger guys yet he looked better and only Lehman looked longer. Was he always a long hitter blessed with natural long hitting prowess? Or is it his mechanics? Thanks.

A little of both.

DT was a baseball pitcher in his youth that once stuck out Albert Belle.

He is not very stumpy at 5'9" and 165.

When he has worked with me we worked on more lag and more up his left arm through the ball. Rob Akins is also big on the same things.

I can throw a football (NFL) nearly 50 yards at age 41 and I am much stumppier (right now, 5'9" 195) than David.

On the practice day there was a gale blowing and it was blowing hard left to right on the par 5 14th which has out of bounds right. Janzen hit a slight cut shot right down the middle and the wind got hold of it and took it out of bounds. Lehman stepped up and over compensated and pulled the ball into the left hand rough. You could see that both players were disturbed by the hole and were not comfortable. DT calmly stepped up looked at ease picked a line on the left hand side of the fairway and went into "automatic" and hit a great shot that ended in the middle of the fairway with no fuss. It is a tough shot and the gale made it even worse. Nothing seems to bother him when he is going into countdown on his shot. How does he do this? Did you do any work on this mental side? This is one area that I feel he is better than the rest. I would like to know how he got to be like that. Thanks.

Hue,
This is a litle bit off topic so I hope you don't mind. When I spent time with Carey Mumford he said he was asked to write the 14th chapter of TGM - the mental part of the game. He has an e-book out with this information - very infomative

Brian: On the Swing Discussions section of FGI you had a post re Tom's million dollar lesson. You said that at some point you would disclose what his swing fault was and what you did to fix it. When will you do this ? Thanks

Brian: Could you post the links to the news paper articles on the lesson you gave Toms that helped him get that million dollar win? Also when will you disclose what you taught him? Thanks.
