This may sound obvious, but you can shank the ball without an open clubface. The ball can hit the hosel with a square-ish clubface, which is quite prevalent.
Having been through this, I can offer my "cure"
It's nothing special - just develop a basic set-up routine.
I first choose a targetfrom behind ball, then move in and place my club so ball is in center of face (or a little toward toe to be sure!). Then adjust my stance keeping club in position. I then make sure my knees are slightly bowed so weight is over feet and (most important) weight is evenly distributed front to back between toes and heel (if anything slightly back).
If I go through this routine every time, I won't shank. My shanking is usually due to me falling into ball on downswing so club comes down outside of take-away plane. If I happen to hit a shank, I now know I can fix it right away.
I too tried briefly what I had read here and on the videos. When I tried it (probaly incorrectly), I skanked a few. I decided that maybe what I needed was "TGC for Seniors", so decided to stick with what I have - Single digits cap using an swing and an old body!
Anyway, shot a 77 yesterday in a 30 knot wind - On last hole I was 110yds out - hit a full 7 and came up short! OK - should have bunted it in, but sometimes braincells give up after 17.5 holes
