Got mine in/ Lesson learned about playing golf

:)
To all,
Got mine in on Friday afternoon slow day on the course(twilight).
Played my home course 71.7/ 131 6309. Started on the back 9
the tougher nine shot a 41 . Clubs I selected was a 6 iron and my putter. What suprised me is how well I struck the ball and another thing was i didnt have to make any decisions on what i was going to hit off the tee and what ball flight ( draw or fade ) All I did was aim down the middle from the right side of the tee box turn back and swing left and POW straight as arrows i hit every fairway ( which I should with a six iron)!!! even found out i was able to hit it about 5 yards further ( using my GPS to mark the distance) I also noticed going into the greens if I use ( chip, pitch, punch and alot of aquired motion shots with and with out a finshed swivel; I could really control my ball into the greens) So on the front nine I played way better shot a 39 a tad bit easier side at my home course 2 par 5's back to back where 540 and then 473 where I could hit 3 solid shots and it took the guess work out of the hole.
So over all I shot a respectable 80 which some times i never shoot with all my clubs....
That stood out to me... I have all ways been worried about how i hit the driver ( Important to me but my short game and my GIR stats should be more important). So yesterday before i watched the PGA I went to a course that I dont play that often loaded my GPS; played it from the back tees 6808. So this is how i played the course if i could carry the hazards with my driver I hit driver if i couldnt I laid back short of them even if i had 4 irons and 5 irons. If I had to hit my (A) game 3 wood to reach the par 5 in two then I lay back and didnt use driver off the tee then hit a 5 wood for postion then a wedge or 9 iron into them then so be it.
I also noticed on that distance of a course i had a bunch of 6 irons into the greens after my tee shots, ( good thing I just played around with just that club) I knew i could hit the greens with that club from around any thing at (160 to 171) so if that was the number to the middle or front I went with that club. I shot a 79 from that distance when i had convenced myself that long courses gave me trouble i always thought I had to hit driver ( Hard and try to kill it which I lost control of my ball flight and my D plane and was always over accelerating) I noticed if i can hit the ball to the 160 and in I can hit the green 7 times out of 10, and there is always a club in my bag for the distance I have up to my 3 wood. I have been trying to work on my swing for a long time but I need to work on my ablity to PLAY golf. Thank you guys a light bulb went off in my head with this exercise. Playing golf with what you have, and work on your swing in practice by watching the ball flight and understanding the D plane. :D:D

Well, hell- that's sweet.

Good stuff RA.

Would you normally lose a fair amount of balls off the tee from playing too aggressively? (with the Big Stick)

I think I work in the evening a few times this week. (mid-week) Fingers crossed for getting a round in.

It was a great lesson

Birdie-man,
Thanks I hope you get to get yours in it was so eye opening to me. Yes when i go at it hard I tend to hit hooks because i swing way under plane and then flip the club face left. so now that i understand the D plane better i now i need to match my swing path and clubhead and my normal to the clubface path to hit better shots under pressure.
I would lose balls out of bounds left and to save it I hit pushes right. But with my new way of thinking you have to narrow your misses to one way. I noticed that everything that i read about course management ( first you have to be able to hit the shots.... I love to try and work the ball to a fault at times, just a fun way to play to me IMO..... In course management the hole is designed to be played in a certain way that fits your personal game for each of us and once i identified that way for me; I think i am in a postion to score better with the swing that i have and the understanding of what my swing is doing through the ball flight. Also i noticed that there is an area of every fairway that gives me the best chance to hit the FW to be able to have a basic driving range shot to the green. We often say that we cant take our driving range game to the course but what i noticed yesterday is playing my home course after work is my driving range lies are prefect blush grass flat and level, I noticed i can really hit great iron shots from those conditions so i have to make sure i have those conditions on the course and i can hit my irons shots well when i do that even if that takes driver out of my hands.... playing 9 holes yesterday i had 4 really legit birdie putts and the other 5 where between 20 and 30 feet but i hit all the greens. shot 2 under 34 for the first time ever... Because what was important to me doesnt seem to produce my best scores and my confidence has soared since that day... Now these are practice sessions, i look forwad to test these ideas in a real event.
Thanks

I made an attempt...

I didn't get through a whole round, but I tried last night with a 6 iron. The course was actually closed due to a couple of inches of rain just an hour earlier. Was actually planning on playing 9 this way, but there was another storm system coming, so I only got through 5 holes. I ended up +2 for the 5 holes, but there was an asterisk next to the score - twice I ended up in greenside bunkers and had to drop outside of them - one was completely full of water, and the other one was half full with the other half full of deep ruts where the water had washed away the sand - not sure how I would have hit out of the bunkers. I parred the 2 par 5s and the 1 par 3, and bogeyed the 2 par 4s. Never hit a green in regulation, but was close enough to get up and down a few times. Hitting off the tee, and full fairway shots were kind of boring playing this way, but the other shots are kind of fun. Hit 2 memorable shots - a little punch cut from 120 yards over water that I hit over the flag into the back fringe, and I felt like Seve once, where the shot called for a high flop - so I laid the blade open and hit it up to 4 feet.

Might be more fun in hard and dry conditions, because you could try to turn it down and hit a low slinger to try to get it to run - I had to play for just carry.

I would like to take you guys on but I suspect you have to be a shot-shape-master to play a round with one club! The only way I can get the ball to turn is on a straight putt or in the ball washer.:D

Geez, I'm sorry...

I'm going to be able to do this tommorow. You guys still in?? You're not bailing are you Martin?:)

I have been buried!!!

I just got back in town from a tourney. PNW PGA - played like I had one club:) 81-76-71. Puke. I actually had my best ball striking round the first day!!! Golf is a bizarre game.

I will do it Tuesday. I have some friends coming out to play and they won't mind or give a hoot. I'll beat the guy by 10 with a 7-iron. That'll get him riled up. My only fear is the deep bunkers:eek:

I played 18-holes with my six iron and putter. I shot 85 at Tetherow. Tetherow is a very fun, very challenging links-ish course in Central Oregon.

The weather was pretty ideal. I played in the Club Championship as a fill-in because we had an odd number. I like to send the groups out in twosomes so the rounds don't take forever.

I played in the last group with the highest handicap fellow in the competition. He's a 22 handicap. He shot 102 with all of his clubs.

Oddly, my score was 4th low gross of the 17 men (my club is new and we don't have very many members with this economy). The handicaps ranged from scratch to my playing partner. The members were pretty surprised I shot 85 with one club and beat almost all of them. They realized how conservative play is needed in stroke play competitions.

The exercise was fun:

I putted lousy or I would have been around 80. I had a few good birdie looks, made one, but had four three putts and a couple brutal chips to 20 feet.

I realized I can't really control the amount of hook I was trying to get on my "stingers." I will work on that. I was aiming out of play to the right and zinging hooks back to the left side of the fairway. I over cooked these shots.

Also, it just solidifies all the D-plane stuff I've learned from being a member of this forum. High cuts, low running hooks, punch fades, punch draws...all good fun with one club.

While I was disappointed with my score, I did have fun and recommend you all give it a try.

Cheers,

MC
