Norman warns that U.S. tour's future in trouble
by PAUL LOGOTHETIS, Associated Press

MADRID, Spain - Technology, money and Tiger Woods are hurting golf, according to two-time British Open winner Greg Norman.

The Australian, who is playing in this week's Spanish Senior Open, said Tuesday that golf will be in major trouble if the U.S. PGA Tour doesn't manage the sport more carefully.

"With fewer and fewer people watching golf in America, the sport has become stagnant," Norman said.

Some U.S. tour events this year reportedly saw significant declines in American television viewership from 2005, such as a 56 percent drop for the Bob Hope Classic, a 50 percent decline for the season-opening Mercedes Championship and a 37.5 percent drop for the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Some analysts have said that Woods being in contention is a major factor in ratings, such as the 22 percent increase in August for the final round of his U.S. PGA Championship victory, but ratings when he successfully defended his title at Doral were still off by 16 percent.

An increase in prize and sponsorship money has put more pressure on players and tournament organizers, Norman said, and that is taking away from the excitement that players such as Lee Trevino and Seve Ballesteros used to create.

"Players need to bring the spirit back," Norman said. "There have always been great players to bring people to the game to lighten it up so that it's not so serious.

"Look at what (Rafael) Nadal has done for tennis because of the way he is, like a boxer. You never hear anyone coming out and saying I want to beat Tiger Woods - I haven't heard that," Norman added. "Nadal comes out and says he wants to beat Roger Federer because he's No. 1 and that's great for tennis."

Norman, who has played little golf - and watched even less - since making his senior's tour debut last year, also said the technology used in making golf clubs should be reserved for amateurs only.

"I have a problem with someone winning a golf tournament without using a driver," Norman said. "The game has always been dominated by power-hitter players, but today you can't tell the difference between the players because of the technology."

Norman said he only watched this year's Ryder Cup after his daughter, who is dating Sergio Garcia, urged him to do so.

"It came down to great teamwork - European players play together, eat together, fly on private jets together and that's for an entire two years, not just for the Ryder Cup, so there's more camaraderie," Norman said. "The Americans are trying to do that now, and I think they're doing better, but their still not there."

The Europeans beat the United States 18 1/2-9 1/2 at The K Club in Ireland last month.

Pretty good job there by Norman.

Man....some of those events on tour ARE borrring.....I love golf and find a lot of em boring......none of the big dogs there. (they are rich already)

...

Yup....no Nadal in golf.....I bet a lot of ppl thought Federer was completely "Unbeatable!" before he lost however many times to Nadal.

....

Ryder Cup......camaraderie....it's true man.....these guys are obviously buddies....pretty at ease together.....whereas the US tried to force camaraderie on the guys by doing dumb things like singing their fight songs. (for example)

I mean.....think about it.....how many guys would not feel like an ass singing a song by themself in front of everyone....?

I think I woulda wanted to tell Lehman to go to..........heck.

I mean....maybe if they came u with their own team song and sung it together or w/e....even then I dunno.....forced.

Bob Hope and AT&T are painful because they keep[ showing Bill Murray or Kevin Costner. No thanks.

Tiger is not Tiger because of his athletic ability, because there are many players who are as physically talented. Tiger is who he is because of his mind, so because he taps into his mental strength so well we should blame him for the shortcoming of others?

It's called ability and talent. Obviously his mental focus helps but it's not like if you take it away he is going to not win those other majors.

I agree that he has a world of golf talent, athletic. but because of his mental mindset, that is what I believe seperates him from being a top 10 pro to number one by leaps and bounds. I am not sure how much people have read about what he does mentally but some of the things they say in steve williams book, the think like tiger book, and another one I have read on him, go into some detail about his mental upbringing/training. To actually sit and meditate can bring moments of clarity and peace unlike anything else, for those who have not tried it, it might be somethng to try once or twice. Tigers new dog is named yogi, that is not just a random name for a dog, there is a meaning behind it.

Agree. I read Earl's book, Raising a Tiger and he talks some about the things that he would do to build TIger's mental toughness. No doubt that there is a ton of talent there but the mental edge is what seperates him from say, Mickelson and Els, etc.

Tiger's Mental Game

Jim I don't often disagree with your posts but I do on this one.
Tiger does have a lot of talent and abilty but so does almost everyone else on the tour. Tiger probably has more ability than 99% of the players out there but not a lot more, some people even think Michelson has as much ability as Tiger. Greg Norman was probably as gifted as Tiger, but he could only rarely close the deal and win a major tournament. In 1986 he led each of the majors after round 3 and only won one. Given those same circumstances how many would Tiger have won? I believe Tiger's mental ability is what seperates him from the rest of the players. If you gave John Daly, Tiger's golfing ability but he kept his same mental abilities his record would be similar to what it is now. Conversely if Tiger had John Daly's golfing ability but Tiger kept his golfing mind, he would be a multiple major winner.

Ok ok...I never looked at it that way.

But...

The only things that that leaves out IMO....is the putting, short game, and I guess you could say decision making.

(especially under the gun)

Not to mention that, I think, Tiger is always improving himself. (vigerously, and in every way)

i.e. aside from the "training" of his youth.

I will admit Tiger's mental ability is stronger than everyone elses and is an advantage. You can thank his parents for that.

But i don't care what anyone says, the man has won majors with 3 different swings.
