When to pick/brush divot?

Brian -

I've found that I hit straighter shots when I feel like I pick the ball (no divot or brush divot) and don't drag the handle into the ground. I've also found that the pick/brush divot doesn't feel anywhere near as solid on a consistent basis as when I drag the handle, massively deloft and throw the club in the ground.

Is a pick, or brush divot, what one would normally see with the 7 iron through 3 wood?

Bacon strips for 8 iron through PW?

Beaver pelts still for GW-LW?

If you had a 120 yard par 3 with relatively flat green would you tee the ball up and pick it with your GW or PW?

My two cents worth...other than Lee Trevino, the best wedge players in the world (all time) took thin divots, not beaver pelts. I can't think of a single good reason why beaver pelts would be a good option, ever.

I'm starting to agree!!!

It seems like a pick will generally produce less spin and therefore less curvature.

Remember that AA does not determine spin (i.e. steeper=more spin, shallow=less spin).

There are too many jokes in the rest of the descriptions being used... must refrain.:)

I don't know if your statement is correct. Spin rate ("spin") is a function of spin loft times clubhead speed. Spin loft = dynamic loft - attack angle.

Attack angle plays a role in the spin imparted on a ball. I believe you're referncing whether one can produce "more" spin by hitting down which doesn't happen. Lower negative attack = less spin loft than the same shot with a higher negative attack angle.

More spin loft = more spin
Less spin loft = less spin

(comparing shot to shot with the same club)

Correct.

I was speaking to the often used logic that AA alone determines spin. I misinterpreted your post... I should've known better.:)
