What is your state of mind, mentality, values, when you play a round of golf?

Do you only play for companionship, socializing, fun, relaxation.... or do you perform to the best of your ability and see it as a personal challenge as well as competition?

What kind of personality do you reveal when you play golf... a fight or fun or both?

I play golf to drink some beer and kick some A$$...and when I run out of beer............................................I am too drunk to kick some a$$. :)

Companionship? I have a dog; socialising? That's what pubs are for, and, if I'm flat-out drilling it and hanging some good numbers, then it's fun and I'm relaxed....

I think half the married guys that play, just do it to get a few hours away from their wives, or so that they don't have to go shopping for candles or throw pillows.

Unfortunately "battlefield". I seldom play with friends anymore. It's usually a practice round or I'm working on something. I probably play 85% of all of my golf by myself.

Really depends on my mood and what kind of day I am having. Most of the time I am pretty relaxed but there are days when I want to proverbially grab the round by the throat and shake it to see what falls out.

The only casual golf I get to play is about 4 or 5 times a year with Shields and even then it's just a "mobile think tank" with focus on improving technique. My golf is usually wrapped up in games for just enough money to make you grind, but not enough to have to roll drug dealers if you lose. I also play all the regional and state AM individual stuff as well as some of the more prestigious best ball tournaments. I try to stay away from casual golf and never drink on the course.

That all may make me sound like a bit of a drip, but I take this shit fairly serious for good or bad. I just find, ultimately, that casual golf ends up dulling your concentration levels when you do tee it up for blood.

Teens to early 30's...total battle. Me against them. "Them" could be playing partners, the course, and/or the elements. Elated when shots came off and scores were good, miserable and Mr No Fun when not.

Mid 30's until early 40's much more relaxed and social (ie LOTS of adult beverages during AND after round). Whether I shot 70 or 80, didn't matter just as long as there were limes in that G&T.

For the past couple of years after I've given up the adult beverages, back to battle mode but with a slightly more mature outlook. :)

I only enjoy playing for fun.

It's fun preparing for a tournament.

It's fun when you're up and hear those two beautiful words... "I'm doubling."

It's fun when you find something after struggling for most of the round and then confidently say... "I'm doubling!"

It's fun playing with better players.

It's fun hurting feelings off the tee and on the green.

it's fun trying to protect having my feelings hurt.

It's fun playing for enough of something that everyone finds it motivating.

It's fun socializing with other players who only want to take my money while hurting my feelings by stripping my confidence as they pat me on the back shake my hand and call me a true friend.

It's fun that the next round can be my record lowest.

It's fun BATTLING.

What is it with 'drinking' on the course? I have never seen it here in the UK but you often hear it from the US. Does that really happen that people drink on the course?

I second that!!!! I play mostly competition golf for me it’s just much more fun.
I’m patient and calm but trying to hang a good number up on every hole to total a really nice round ... I love to be in the heat of the battle near the lead or in the lead of any AM tournament or my MGA.
The blood gets racing and that’s why I hit all those balls and take lessons and always on the site to test the things that I have been working on with the pencil in hand!

Quite often. Especially in charity "scrambles". Only way to survive the darn things...which is why I quit playing in them. :)

One of the reasons I do not like playing in scrambles is the drinking. I am pretty competitive. Even if my team cannot win I want us to shoot the lowest score possible. When half of my team is too drunk to play by the fifth hole it ceases to become fun for me. I can remember playing in a scramble where my teammates each showed up with 2 quart pitchers of bloody mary's on the first tee. One of them actually fell down going to tee his ball up on the first tee. Needless to say we used nearly every single one of my shots that day. By the fifth hole the one guy stopped even hitting because he was too drunk to stand up much less swing. I have no problem with people drinking during play but when they get sloppy drunk it ruins the fun IMHO.

I've seen the evidence in the UK that it happens. Tee bins full of empties - although that's generally the sign of a corporate outing having been on the course. For the most part, I think that in the UK drinking is treated with sufficient seriousness that it would be considered poor form to not concentrate wholly on the task in hand.

I'm not sure what age you are ParHunter or whether you'll remember big Bill Werbeniuk...? His foreign ways never caught on in the snooker hall. Darts is maybe a wee bit more outward looking in this regard...

Lots of time to indulge post-round. But I do have one or two on the course. Anything over that and I become lazy and the game suffers.

Bill Werbeniuk? Was that the guy who had to stop playing because they banned alcohol in snooker competitions?

With respect to alcohol on the course. I don't tend to play on courses that have lots of corporate outings.
I think you might find some beer cans on 'Pay&Play' courses where an England football shirt counts as proper golf attire ;-)

The 19th hole is of course different!
