Am I about average????

The following is a list of how far I hit my irons on average:

4-190
5-180
6-170
7-155
8-145
9-135
PW-120
SW-105

I am 5'10 205, and a 6 hcap.

Is this about right, or should I be focusing on increased distance with these clubs?

I would be interested in hearing other's results as well.

If you compress it and hit it the way you want, distance really doesn't mean much.

I would say those are "good weekend player" averages.

Why the big gap between the 6 & 7?

BTW, I am the same height and weight. I can bomb the 6,7 & 8 irons (185, 175, 165) respectively, but am very average to below average with distances on the rest of my clubs.

I am also horribly inconsistent, despite watching my lesson review with Brian at least once a week and doing mirror work endlessly. I can't seem to translate it. I guess that's why I'm here.

GL,

I am just the opposite, I can really move the driver and 3 wood and utility.

BTW, my lofts are:

4-24
5-27
6-31
7-35
8-39
9-43
PW-47
SW-52

I am the best iron player in my world. Your distances seem about average. I tinker so much that it is hard to keep track of what my true distance with each club is. Before my equipment change to weak lofted irons, and with my NHA/MA hybrid pattern my distances were:

19* iron faced hybrid (el cheapo!): 250ish off a tee.
4- 240
5- 220
6- 180
7/8- 150-175
9- 140-115
pw/sw- 10-110

This list reflects how I actually used each club. Often times, I might use a 7 iron to hit a 150 yard shot because it is easy, and not because that is the farthest I can hit it. It comes down to feel and confidence.

I am having my 9 & PW bent a couple of degrees stronger. I hit the current 9 iron 135 or so and the PW around 120. It's tough to tell how far I hit those 2 irons since I rarely hit full out shots with them.

One of my favorite shots is a 3/4 8 iron that goes 140 yards and has a lot of spin.

The number on the sole doesn't count for anything.
It's just a way to correlate which club you hit the distance you need it to.
Distance gaps and consistency are far more important than bragging that you can hit a 32* 7i 175 yards.

Dude I wasn't bragging. I was just stating that I am longer with the mid irons and relatively short everywhere else. Obviously I have a swing issue, I also thought it was an interesting topic, from what I have read no one said anything outlandish. BTW, it's a 35* 7 iron, I had the lofts checked.

I'd be willing to bet you are above average compared to the mortals. Probably below average compared to the immortals. Try throwing in accuracy for mortals and could be interesting.

Self mastery is probably in a different league. The only way I can match his 4iron distance is to be high on top of a mountaintop hitting down toward the base. I still may come up short of 240. As long as he is, it would be embarrasing taking a shower next to him....! :)

Distance does matter but distance control trumps. And it's a depends situation. my 3 iron is used for distances of anywhere from 50-210, depending on how far in the woods, behind the tree, punch draw or fade, geographic location, temperature, etc...

but I get your drift,,,on average.

average carry right now in 50-60 degree weather,
4, 23* 180
7, 34* 150
pw, 46* 120

These distances don't make sense to me. If you can hit a stock 5 iron 220 and can only get the 6 iron to go 180 it doesn't make any sense. either your long irons are bent really strong or you are flipping the shorter irons.

What would those distances be in 80 or 90 degree weather??? Any idea?

7 iron will go 160-165 on a smooth pass.
pw 130
basically, around 10 yards.

In my notes, the effect temperature has on the ball is topped out at 70*. For every 3* drop in temperature from 70, the ball will travel one less yard. Unfortunately, I did not cite my source , but no doubt temperature affects distance.

As far temperature effect on body, a huge difference. A bunch tighter in the cold along with gear hampering the swing. And in 90-95*+ and throw in humididty, maybe a little to loose?

Where I see the dramatic change is playing November golf when it's just above freezing levels in the Seattle area and I make my annual journey to Henderson/Las Vegas to play golf. Huge difference.

You missed this part of my post? :

6I-SW are finesse clubs for me. I can blast my 6 iron much longer than 180, but I have no reason to do so.

Can't wait to perfect the driver and empty the wallets of everyone around here :) A good short game wouldn't hurt either. I'm all good iron play and good putting. My driving and wedge game need a lot of work.

It still doesn't make any sense, you would have to swing sooooooo much slower to hit that 6 iron 180 it would feel uncomortable to most people.

Now i'm not saying you can't hit the ball far. Doesn't really bother me, it just doesn't make sense to me. Something seems off, when did you last measure your lofts? Are these distances you play to for CARRY distance? Is your 5 iron over 38"?

Those distances were with my old e4 weighted mcgreggor's. I now play mp-14's with much weaker lofts. I couldn't find my old 5 iron, but I do have my old 4 iron (which is going back in the bag to act as a 2 iron in this set) and my 6 iron. The 6 iron measures 37" and the 4 iron is 38".
