Anyone here played Pinehurst?

Stayed a week during All Star Break. The greens on No. 2 were young and slow. In the words of my caddie Jefferson, "Leave the 52 at home Boss."

If you want to discover the magic of Hogan, Nelson, and Snead, you will learn the fine art of the Pitching Wedge. No thought of getting under the ball.

I have many fond memories of Pinehurst courses and # 2 for sure. I played in 4 PGA Club Pro Championships there - 3 in the 70's and once in 1988 - finished 3rd that year 1 stroke out of playoff (won by Bob Boyd - a great player from the Carolinas, now deceased) - made 6 3's on the front nine of # 2 in the final round for a score of 32 but couldn't back it up on the back nine for a 38 and round of 70.

Also played in the US Senior Open there in 94 - tied for about 40th I think.

#2 is a great "2nd shot" course that requires precise distance control to keep the ball on the greens. Looks very "open" off the tee, but plays a lot tighter. Only 1 water hazard on the course and the OB's are not that close to the course.

I know this makes me a geek, but if anyone ever wants to write a History of the Pitch Shot in the 20th Century, I'd buy. Tommy Armour talked about playing pitch shots with maybe a 9 iron, and I don't know if he even had any bounce to use. Obviously, times have changed. Although I know a few munis that might call that into question.

Coore and Crenshaw have also designed The Dormie Club in the Pinehurst area and it has gotten some great reviews. It started out as a very exclusive private club but it ran on some hard financial times and has opened up to some outside play at selected times to generate some revenue.
