southpaw: I was taught by Denis Pugh Leadbetter's former partner just after they split. Their tour players had to make a choice as to which coach they went to. Pugh was coaching Frank Nobilo, Wayne Riley, Peter O' Malley and a few other players. This was just after his star player who I have met and had a talk with Mark Davis packed Pugh in. I know for fact that Leadbetter DID teach the "one size fits all" approach . I discussed this with Pugh and he said they "Leadbetter and Pugh" had learned that this did not work and were moving away from it. I also have spoken to a couple of tour players when I was caddying in the same group for a player friend of mine who did not make it. At the time I was a Leadbetter fan because I knew no better. These guys went into detail about potential stars that they knew that were flat ruined and coached off the tour by this pair. Leadbetter was described as a "Fraud" and one of the critisms was that he did not work around the player but wanted to impose his swing on them. I am sure that Leadbetter has changed his ideas in this area . His failures who with their ruined careers that don't make the headlines have paid the price that enabled him to change from his ridgid teaching structure to this all enlightened "I work around the player" spin. Finding out the real state of play was a shock to me but when it comes from the mouths of a grand slam winner and several players that have or do play on the tours. It makes you sit up and smell the coffee. His success is by virtue of riding Faldo's back and IMG creating and marketing the newish concept of the star coach. The fact that he is now reinventing himself as this kind of enlightened "work around the player" coach makes me puke it is pure hypocricy . The guy is a fraud. Great coaches should be judged more by their success in coaching guys onto the tours rather than tinkering with already great players that are there already. There is a lot more that I could go into but IMHO Mathew has got it right about him however he arrived at his conclusions. Fame is not always a product of competence. Leadbetter may promote himself as the "Sultan of Swing" but the " Sultan of Spin" is much closer to the truth.quote:Originally posted by southpaw
As for the assertion that Leadbetter isn't a coach... I don't agree, and without trying to canonize Lead, I can tell you that nobody stays in business this long by selling a "one size fits all" approach. I'm sure that he tailors his instruction to the various individual players and what they bring to him. You cannot tell me that Trevor Immelman swings the same as Badds, or that Els swings the same as Justin Rose. I've seen and analyzed all these players on video, and I can tell you that there are small but fundamental differences between each player. The assertion that there is one "Leadbetter" mold is bunk. Yeah, he over-hypes and over-markets himself, and it's easy to hate him because of that, but don't think that he isn't just as much of a coach as Harmon. Jim Flick, on the other hand...

Mathew,
I don't believe he is toe up at the first parallel.

If you re-read what I wrote - I never said he is - I'll rewrite in simplier sentences
Lead teaches toe up. Nick Price does the correct thing with having the clubface hooded in the sequence. Perhaps in future Lead will enforce his junk onto Price...
Make anymore sence ?

I see he's not toe up at first parallel like lead teaches, perhaps that will be the next spanner lead will throw into the cog.

The money list would tell a good story too.
