Yes, it worked. So do the swings of any number of pros today who can probably hit the ball a lot better. BJ had a decent delayed hit, that was the reason he hit the ball better than most guys of his era.
The reason he had a "decent delayed hit"? He had inactive hands at the transition from the backswing to the downswing coupled with an active lower hip turn. Highly recommended for a swing pattern. That's it. There is nothing else to emulate or praise in his takeaway, backswing, footwork, or followthru. Frankly, they make me ill.
That's for the full swing. I have seen clips of his short game, and it appeared to be excellent if not outstanding. Combine that with an ability to win, and you have a world famous Champion of his time.
