Thanks to the clip on the SA forum - Peter Dullards collection - can I present a sequence that enables a closer look at his power package...

As far as my Bobby Jones comments.....

I watched the Jones video this year and the guy is BANGING down on the ball--with his irons---with his right arm.

Obviously pushing with the right arm.

Looks to me like he is still swinging.

Does he have the "chicken wing"?

No, Jones has "Rhythm Control" on full swings. This picture I believe is a punch (approach) shot he perfected to bring the ball in low to the ground, thus the abbreviated finish. He is probably using a mashie (5 iron).

< But the point is that it DID work, so I believe there is something to be learned in studying HOW he got it to work.>

Yes, it worked. So do the swings of any number of pros today who can probably hit the ball a lot better. BJ had a decent delayed hit, that was the reason he hit the ball better than most guys of his era.

The reason he had a "decent delayed hit"? He had inactive hands at the transition from the backswing to the downswing coupled with an active lower hip turn. Highly recommended for a swing pattern. That's it. There is nothing else to emulate or praise in his takeaway, backswing, footwork, or followthru. Frankly, they make me ill.

That's for the full swing. I have seen clips of his short game, and it appeared to be excellent if not outstanding. Combine that with an ability to win, and you have a world famous Champion of his time.

Let me correct that last sentence:

Combine that with an ability to win, and you have a Champion of his time who will always be world famous.

But I'll repeat, if someone posted his swing and we didn't know of his reputation, people from this group would be tearing it down left and right. Same for many golfers of the earlier era.

When Hogan, Nelson, and Snead came along, the golf swing took a quantum leap forward.

Hard to argue with what D.A. is saying...

Although I think I would admire the downswing regardless of era or what I knew about him. But the backswing is rather funky looking. Smooth, fluid, and pretty, but funky compared to what we look at nowadays.

Or maybe Jones is the premis and today's backswings are funky.
