A GEM!

"The average teacher will listen intently to what I perceive as being my problem and "try to help" fixing what I already knew needed to be fixed. And pour his tea in a dirty cup.

The potential for transferring value is obvious."

EXACTLY!!!

The current PGA of America stance is to do a lengthy interview.

Almost always, A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME.

Dr. Gary Stein would disagree with you about the interview Brian:D :D :D .

Ben Doyle would do the interview in the sand trap! :)

Not even that.

Ben is a great example. When I went to see him - my forst IRL TGM encounter - I had a zillion questions and a zillion ideas about THE BOOK and about my golf swing. I thought I needed this and that and I thought my problems were... I was really curious to see how he'd start out. Would he sit down with me and listen to my gobbling about TGM and my swing?

Not quite.

t=0 sec
Handshake. "- I am Ben".

t=2 sec
Drop ten balls by my feet.

t=8 sec
"- I want you to hit the first ball 5 yards. The next 10 yards. And so on".

I started hitting the balls. Ben took his own stack of balls and did the same in front of me. He outperformed me by a mile. Hitting the balls at a frequency three times mine and three times as accurate.

t=100 sec
"- You have a lot of leakage. Lets go to the sandtrap".

You know the rest.

Only after a few minutes or so he said: "But you want to teach people how to play golf, isn't that right"

I said: "No. I am only here to improve on my own game".

He said: "Oh, I see".

That's exactly how much he cared about my background. The answers were in the dirt. And I can't say how much I support his approach.

The "hit it 5 yards, then 10" was his way of pouring tea. Comparing the results cleaned my cup completely.

A masters way of making the student shaddap and understand that he need to listen. And not start goobbling about this and that.

True all that interview stuff pros do with their students is just to build up rapport and suck up to them so they like us and come again next week because the coach has no cirriculum. Really the issue is leakage and overacceleration, working on anything they think they really need is a waste of time initially!
