Debate Question: Is Tiger better now, or was he better in 2000-2001?

Just wondering if we could start a debate on this topic. I bring this up cause I have a strong feeling that Eldrick is going to go on a crazy major run in the next 3 years, so I thought I'd bring it up now before he goes nuts. Me...I'd take Tiger now over the Tiger then, even though the stats may say otherwise. Opinions??

tiger is a badass. he has an uncanny ability to hit the shot and make the putt that he needs to win.

but, i liked his 2000 swing better. it was more "golf," and less "golf swing."

i pulled his golf stats from both years once, i'll have to look them up and see if i can find them. However i do believe he putted a lot better in 2000 and he was more accurate with the driver. Just look at this past open, if you watched the whole event like i did you would know that Tiger would have walked away with it if he had putted even DECENT. So many of his birdie and par putts were burning edges all week long.

I know his stats were better back then as well....I think you posted them once Jim(can't recall), but I just have this feeling that his swing is starting to come together and he is actually really close this time. Just a gut feeling..thats all. Anyone else feel this way?

Absolute truth!

Yeah, 2-putt Tiger showed up instead of 1-putt Tiger. 1-putt Tiger would have won that in a cakewalk.

One thing that struck me during the Open when Tiger trailed by 14 shots to Rickey Barnes (when he went to -11), I thought, wow, in 2000 he beat the entire Open field by 15, and now he trails Rickey Barnes by 14.

He'll get to 19 or 20 majors no matter what he does with his swing.

It'll just take a little longer if he goes from un-human putting to very good putting.

No doubt.

He was playing golf instead of playing golf swing. Just look at his old swing... so dynamic!

Take note of the above quoted post Vjsinger, as this is the difference of a player and a constant practicer on the course, some do and some keep telling themselves how to!;)

If you want to see for yourself, the USGA put together a digital exhibit celebrating his 3 US Junior Ams, 3 Us Ams, and 3 Us Opens.

His swings from 91, 92, 93, 94 are so dynamic and powerful for such a small kid. His putting was also unreal.

His swing in 00, 01 was so pure and natural he was really able to impose his will on the ball.

I'm a huge Tiger fan... and I think he was really onto something at the Memorial, swinging more naturally and not trying to follow Haney exactly.

We'll see...

I saw what the USGA did..pretty cool. I agree with you 100%. I think he's found something as well in the last month or so. At times he looks scary good..IMO better than 00-01, at times.

IMO he did the same thing he did after the last british he played in; he is standing a bit closer and swinging a bit more upright which keeps him from getting soooooooooooo underplane which is the bane of his current swing.

Yessir.

Check out his US Am and 2000-2001 swing, no forced moves... pure athleticism.

That being said... at times his current swing performs pretty durn well...

and there it is... the first FTW I have seen on this forum in over 2 years of being on this site...:p

anyway, do any of you have links to video of his 00 - 01 swing, or have any links with manzella breaking that swing down?

I haven't seen a Brian breakdown of his 00-01 swing with the new d-plane stuff, but I would love to see that if he made it.

But try going to Usopen.com and scroll down on the left will be a link to his exhibit full of video footage

Anecdotally, it seemed the 2000 Tiger seemed to bomb it by everyone thus had a distinct advantage of hitting shorter clubs into the green. Also, he made everything he looked at. That's a recipe for destroying the field. Now??? Like Phil said a few weeks back...Tiger needs to putt like a mad man to beat us by 1. However, he is so mentally tough he gives himself sooooo many chances to win.

I think the 2000 Tiger was better, he had no visible weaknesses, short game, driving, iron play, putting were all awesome, i expect he would be a better course manager now but back then he was awesome hittiing it inside 15 feet and making tons of putts, blasting tee shots past just about everyone- but that kind of golf is unsustainable imo
