I agree David...

I always used to read too much into it...but that's because, at the time, there were "missing pieces to the puzzle" that I didn't know about...so I'd try and "rip the puzzle apart and start over again"...if you know what I mean.

I think...if you emulate his grip, his "single" forward ball position (Ben Doyle method w/ varying stance width/axis tilt and stance line), his plane/right elbow, and the amount he opens up the clubface on the backswing...you will be pretty close.

And again, if you take anything away...you may have some trouble.

As we all know, Hogan worked very hard and finally found a swing that worked good enough for him to become a great golfer. Wouldn't it have been interesting to be on the sidelines watching him take a lesson from Brian? ;)

1 question: Did Hogan ever strengthen his grip for short irons/lower shots?

I have an observation too...about his right foot...he seems to hold it on the ground longer through impact for his short irons than with his driver swing.

The funny thing is...I tried this and it worked very very well for me...very crisp, mashed punch-irons.

I had noticed the same thing; if I don't lift my right foot my short irons fly better. Can anyone explain this to me?

Could it be that you are "anchored" more effectively to the ground? And therefore you don't come out of your posture "bob." And therefore your low point isn't moving around?

I think you can just hit down more because of less axis tilt thru the ball...that's my guess.

It does work tho...very well for me.

With a SWING, the wider the stance and the stronger the lower body action, the less you can keep the right foot down w/o ruining your back.

This morning, I discovered that by thinking about the right knee moving towards the target at the beginning of the downswing, I could slide my hips parallel to the target line and maintain the tush line, alignments which I afterwards verified in a mirror.

Knowing the WHAT, that the hips and tailbone slide parallel to the target line, didn't tell me the HOW. Conscious lateral sliding of the hips always resulted in a cross-lateral slide. Same thing with trying to start the downswing with the left foot or left leg.

Once upon a time, I tried moving my right knee towards the inside of the ball, but that pulled my right hip towards the ball, and caused an over the top move.

I have been unsuccessfully and stubbornly trying to consciously start the downswing from the lower left side, as that is where the pivot train is supposed to start, according to HK.

I am certain my right knee isn't powering or starting the downswing, only providng feedback that my hips have slid properly, parallel to the target line.

That is probably what Hogan's so called secret of the right knee is all about. An individual feeling, not proper mechanics of a great golfswing, , as others here have already stated. Mechanics is NOT learned from feel; it's the other way around.

Oh man, I hope this works this time.
