Good grief this game!!!

This game is just too frustrating. I've never had a problem with shanks until the past few weeks. Once again I started my range session with great PW's, then switched to a 8 iron: shank, shank, shank. Went back to PW: shank, shank, shank. Then said what the hell and grabbed my 3 wood: bomb, bomb, bomb. Switched back to iron: shank, shank, shank. I was killing my 3 wood (at least for me) around 240-250 yards. Nice trajectory and I could even work it left or right almost on demand. Put an iron in my hand and I just have NO idea what to do. I would go back to a banana ball slice if I could get rid of these shanks. I've NEVER had this much lack of confidence in my game. I was really expecting this year to be my best by far.

My shanks:

Hitting either the hosel or very very close to the heel. Balls go low and right with TONS of left to right spin. Sometimes they even go very low and almost straight. Taking divots as well with these, sometimes big. I've tried to rotate the sweetspot from the top and it just doesn't work. I tried putting the grip into my right pocket and hit some decent PW's in the beginning but then it went to hell in a handbasket. I've tried to get a toss feeling, nothing is helping. My camera is coming tomorrow so hopefully I can post something.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm about to go buy some boxed wine and listen to Barry Manilow while I cry myself to sleep in the fetal position.

I'm guessing there has to be something wrong with your grip. Too strong in at least one, if not both, of the hands. Just a guess.

Thinking about all this it seems like my 3 wood swing was so much more fluid and I wasn't trying to really do anything. It was just nice and easy, like swinging the Orange Whip. The irons were not even close.

Anyways, I'm gonna crack a Mt Dew and watch a movie. Hoping Bagger will help me find my swing:

"Yep... Inside each and every one of us is one true authentic swing... Somethin' we was born with... Somethin' that's ours and ours alone... Somethin' that can't be taught to ya or learned... Somethin' that got to be remembered... Over time the world can, rob us of that swing... It get buried inside us under all our wouldas and couldas and shouldas... Some folk even forget what their swing was like... "

A wild guess here but I'm wondering if you've overcooked one of the tumble concepts you were working on. Try swinging under the stick and see if that helps. And definitely get some video if you can. Someone here will get you back on track.

I'd say that's a pretty good guess. You might be on to something. I'm definitely fairly steep because my kids were enjoying some of the divots flying around. Hopefully it won't take me too long to figure the camera out.

I appreciate all of the comments. I'm sure I sound annoying talking about my game going from good to bad to good to bad lately.

Make sure your weight isn't back on your heels at setup. Your swing momentum will then want to pull you forward a bit on the through swing and it's hosel hell. I know this one from personal experience.

Just so you know, you can tumble the crap out of it and still take very shallow divots. Higher VSP does not necessarily mean higher AoA. You probably didn't over-do the tumble.

I get what you're saying. I didn't necessarily mean he overdid the tumble, but maybe overdid something or added something goofy trying to do the tumble.

I'd guess his path has changed from in-to-out to out-to-in and he's sliding ahead of the ball with his upper body.

Sometimes when I start off trying to hit wedges I end up trying for too much forward lean...I'll end up shanking my short irons particularly.

Not gonna really "shank" a wood like you would an iron. (you will "heel" it) And you'll probably be less apt to "lag the hosel" because you aren't gonna rip down on it as much.

Because...you are standing further away from it thus swinging flatter...

...and don't need to deloft a wood very much for solid contact. (hit a wedge with too little forward lean and it goes nowhere)

Just from my experience. Maybe it can be applied here. Good luck Curt.

Ok, here's my first attempt at a video. I'll post a couple. This is the first swing I took and noticed how far past parallel I was. If you watch close you can see the clubhead go past my shoulder a bit. When I found this out I figured this was the problem. Not really, kept shanking some after I tried to not swing so far back. Oh yeah, jump to like 1:25, not sure how to edit.

Woah!

btw, you can edit your movie in movie maker if you are using window.
it's usually in c:/programfiles/movie maker

You can edit your any of your video in just seconds.

Standing too erect with hands too close to body. On down swing hands accordingly move away from body causing hosel rockets.

Rx: Increase knee flex and bend over more like a golfer allowing arms to hang down more naturally.

Here's the other but not past parallel. Same result however.

My eyes, my eyes!

Just kidding Curtis. I have had a few cases of the shanks in my golf life as well. Terrible feeling and hate seeing people struggle with them. I don't have any advice per say, but stay positive, I am sure Jim can straighten you out in a matter of mintues.
