Hogan move from Address (page 3 pics)

hey, if something is moving when taken by a still video, then it's a fact that it's moving...3D just gives you an extra dimension to more precisely pinpoint the direction of that movement in space. So if you see on video someone's hips moving in the backswing...then obviously the hip is moving...you might not be able to tell if it’s accelerating/decelerating, or precise direction of movement in 3D space, but you can still tell it's moving.

Exactly. Gross movement.

Now, what MJ was saying was "serious analysis"......no, for that, 3d.

what's interesting to me regarding the first pic is, would Hogan get the same look if he just rotated around his spine, or does that look necessitate some lateral shifting of the spine?

Brian,
I'm not judging. Furthermore, much of the context of my comments were lost when you edited my response to Art.

An anthropological approach is a better way to understand hogan. A good place to start would be in finding out what golf books were available back in Hogan's era.

To begin the downswing, TURN YOUR HIPS BACK TO THE LEFT. THERE MUST BE ENOUGH LATERAL MOTION FORWARD TO TRANSFER THE WEIGHT TO THE LEFT FOOT.

5L, p.90

Cheers

How and in what sequence of initiation regarding hip movement is that best achieved?

IMHO, as soon as possible before the backswing stage ends the linear movement of hips should happen since the sooner it is completed the sooner pure rotation can happen on an already established vertical axis of downsing rotation.

But this is just theory I believe in. Brian & co. will answer your question much better from practical sense, I guess.

Cheers

Wow, his move away from the ball/target doesnt seem far, buy his move toward the ball/target is HUGE or is that parallax?

The red outline changed from the first picture in the sequence to an almost completed backswing position. That makes the move forward look larger than from set up.

I thought it would be a good idea to show the gross movement from the address position and then from the most rightward shifted position.

Thanks to Brian for posting these frames. I have not seen all of these positions previously on this site.

Thanks to you Dariusz for posts #27 and #29.

Relative to #27, what should I conclude from #29? Does it reinforce #27 or are you suggesting 5L, p.90 might be misinterpreted?

Thanks

I am of the opinion that Hogan never paid any special attention to the linear motion. He was just very aware that it must happen because we're bipeds. Linear part happens automatically then.
Please watch the clip on the beach when old Hogan presented to his friends how the swing motion should look like in a slow motion. Pay attention which parts of the swing are being underlined and which are not present at all. There is no linear part underlined at all.

Cheers

The left shoulder looks like it rises upward quite late into the downswing. At 3rd parallel it's as low if not lower than at address. It's difficult to say by how much it has risen in the frame from the red outline.
