No worries Redgoat - I don't consider that flat left a 'must', but do consider it easier - the 'must' is the forearm/clubface alignment - however one gets there, works for me. Same with the right elbow - as long as things are on plane. It's just easier to get there keeping them the same distance apart, otherwise you have to have manipulation coming down (well, more variables anyway, conscious action or not). The more you can keep your right elbow/forearm and shaft on the same plane the better (although certainly not for the shoulder joint)
