How in the crap does this happen????

Ok, so I am fresh off a great week of ball striking and scoring on some very difficult courses from our annual golf trip. I come home and hit a half bucket of shanks at the range and promptly cancel my weekend tee times.

Now, I know what causes shanks, and I know enough about my swing to know why I do it, but come on! I absolutely, dominated a championship layout on the golf trip on back to back days and now I am getting under it so bad I am hitting shanks! And, I am not hitting draws or hooks!

At the range I took some time to experiment a little. I strengthened my grip noticeably to the point where the club was closed at setup. I was even hitting blocks and block fades with that setup. This tells me that I am under rotating the left arm something fierce. I also load quite a bit with a step on the right, step on the left pivot and I am guessing that ‘stepping on the left’ really torques the shaft and opens up the hosel into my downswing. At the range, I almost can’t twist enough to lag the sweetspot on some of these shots. The worst of this is with 8-SW.

I have resisted the technical and mechanical golf swing info for years but maybe I am missing something that is obvious to others?

Just when you think you have this game figured out!

Any thoughts?

I have been working on the sd backswing and found that I really need to underrotate the left arm on the backswing with the right foot step initiating the backswing. My shanks come from over rotation of the left arm. I step on right foot, left arm feels it is rolling a bowling ball to my right, directly away from the ball. No rotation, left palm up feel in backswing, dribble up wall feel with right hand. This has done wonders for my shanks. I now feel that I can move into left side aggressively, as long as I am swinging left with arms. You need to make sure arms swing left, or else you will shank or block. I have found I cannot swing too far left, considering how far inside out I hit it. SD backswing/ NHA downswing.

jb,
Try a few practice swings with your left arm only...the feeling should be of doing a backhand slap (on someone's face!!..:))with your left hand going from flat/bowedapproaching impact to flat thro impact, to cupped as your left arm raises towards the finish...try it without a club first...

PLayed 3 times this week all lights out, including a 73 yesterday with 3 penalty shots!

Stupid game.

I think my main reason for posting this thread to begin with was to see if all of this new d plane science has an answer for 'getting under it'. I have resisted learning this stuff to this point, but maybe it is time to start.
