Time to update this thread.

I wound up getting on the Flightscope system and trying all kinds of things. I couldn't really do what I thought is snapping the chain, and if I did succeed it presented no extra speed.

Here's what I mainly tried (in the downswing) in Brian's lingo: positive torque, negative torque, and no torque. Generally the positive torque seemed to be most consistent and fastest speed. But the max I picked up was only 5 mph overall. And a large part of that was from getting my hands higher.

Then I went to the range and had Mr. McKinney help (who I've seen before). Instead of high hands we worked on a fuller shoulder turn, and drastically simplified the downswing - I would say it feels like it is no torque. Picked up at least 5 maybe 10 mph. Even at the end when I was playing around and forcing shorter clubs to a specific flag, I could hit it with two less clubs than before.

Looking forward to playing this weekend. :)

Well I would say yes. I need to maximize and get everything as wound up as possibly can. I believe I'm using the hips and core in the beginning like a running start to get the shoulders thrown back and around as possible, and have no conscious desire to restrict them at all.

@ dbl ... an extra 5 mph means you generated about 10% more kinetic energy ... and 10 mph is about 20% more kinetic energy. How did it feel generating that much more "power" with a few simple changes to your swing ..??!!!

Good question, I guess, because the exertion feels greater. Bill even was asking 'how much I got in me.'. The best part was seeing that higher exertion did not lead to breakdowns or loss of accuracy. So in practice I'll see if there is 'more'.
