Interesting discussion at the start of the broadcast tho....about how a lot of people and people on Tour kiss Tiger's arse....and how VJ never does.....they said there's an unspoken respect between them.....VJ won't kiss up....Tiger apparently respects that.
I believe the reason tiger would respect that is because he believes VJ has a strong mind, something tiger prides himself in as well. Imagine what a boxer would think if before the fight his oppenent said, "you know he is a great boxer but anything can happen in there. I am going to give it my best and hope I come out on top" That seems to be the attitude of some of the tour players. Tiger wants someone to step up to the challenge, and if he wins when someone does that he would enjoy victory that much more. Tiger woudl probably trade a few trophies for an intense rival.

Ya no crap man.....in a way that's what you do but in another way it's a bit of a cop out I think. (and a real plain vanilla canned answer) Good post.

birdie, how did you feel about adam scotts comments yesterday before the final round saying something like "yeah, he will get the best of me more times then not, but sooner or later I should beat him, maybe not the majority of the time but sometimes"

What an inspiring speech Scott gave! If we were curious why he hasn't lived up to his potential . . .!

I didn't hear the speech...

I dunno man...he's prolly right but it's one thing to give credit to a competitor (maybe briefly) and another thing to sound like a wuss....I didn't hear him tho so I can't say.

I was listening to Ernie tonight and he just doesn't seem really motivated.

He has even admitted he's okay with how he is....and said something to the effect of not overly caring much if he wins more majors....although he did say he would like to have won all 4 by the time his career is over....

...I guess you can't take it away from him really but man I want to see someone who is. (motivated that is)

...

Tiger is lookin good tho no doubt.

It hard to beat a guy your saying stuff like that too.

Here is what I would say:

So Brian, you are playing Tiger tomorrow, you are just a lowly golf teacher, and it is a fluke of nature that you made it to this final pairing. We—the all-knowing golf media—have decided you have no chance. What do you think? Will you be intimidated by the great man?

"First of all, maybe you guys don't realize, but I worked my arse off to get here. I had played about 175 rounds of golf for 10 years, but after starting to teach myself—and not just experiment for fun on the range—I am the most improve player in golf history. Tiger knows that, and figures I must have figured something out (about golf). I did, and I ain't telling. But let me say this: Tiger has a great swing, and I love the way his shaft stays exactly parallel to his original shaft plane at address, just beautiful. I also love the way he times that Hogan-like reverse swivel thingy he does pass the follow-through. Just like old Ben. But most of all, I love how he times the flip on his putting. It looks sooooo much better than when he used to make everything as a kid with a stiff wristed style. I won't be watching tomorrow though. I don't watch other golfers when I play them head to head."

;)

Haha that's mint.

Do you really want to tell him EXACTLY what he should work on tho?

They gotta get into Tiger's head a bit tho for sure man.....

At least try to....

And at least talk like you want to win.....put some HEAT on the guy.....at least try to......

I dunno.....talk about a few short putts he missed....(me might think of it next time he misses one....).....something.....

None of this:

"Oh gee......ya well Tiger's really great you know.....he's the best.....we, and I, just don't know what to do. I'm just gonna go out there and do my own thing.....and play my own game....and....(insert other cliche that means you really have no idea what you're gonna do).....and then I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and hope to god I get something going."

Translation: "I'm really scared of Tiger and I'll just stay out of his way cause I think there is zero (zero) chance of me winning. And I'm not gonna try to really improve myself a lot either cause it's futile and we're playing in 'the Woods era.' (I want Tiger's autograph he is my golf hero)"

...

Yarrghrrghrg!!!

Compete!!! Someone!! If anyone actually wants it bad that is......(dunno bout some of these guys....they're all so rich now)...

....do that....or else play it cool and don't kiss up at all. (like Vijay or someone)

You think Watson or Trevino ever said....."Aw gee well this is the Nicklaus era and that's it that's all gonna fold my tent right here."

I mean you can give him some credit.....but say it quick and get it over with. He deserves some and it's a polite thing to do or w/e.

....

I mean....

I can guarantee Tiger thinks about what he wants to say (what he wants to get inside everyone's head) when he gets the mike in his face.

And he should man....that's part of the game.....you gotta get in ppl's heads....it works.

Look at Ben Hogan even....all the talk about a secret....I mean.....it was true in a sense cause the guy obviously knew what to do with a golf club.....but I mean......

"The secret......Ooooooohhhhhh!!!!" (mysterious..........!!!)

You create a aura around yourself....you get in ppl's heads cause they think you know something they don't or can do something they can't.....or even just saying in some way you're not scared.

...

I just got the Hogan vs. Snead match the other day...

I thought it was funny how at the end of the match Hogan shook Snead's hand and said: "Thanks for the round sam. Too bad you didn't play a little better so we couldn't have a real match."

(hehehehe)

Whether he knew it or not (he must have) he was being a little cocky. And nothing much Snead could but smile and nod and feel a little smaller.

The trick is NOTto try to get into Tigers head but to keep him out of yours.

There is NOTHING you can do on course that will affect his game one iota, so play your own game as well as you can and ignore his presence completely - then you might have a chance.

Ya that's the other part of it of course.

...

I mean....you have a point....

There's more than one way to go about it and that depends on the style of the player and the person.

It depends on what you do best.....if a guy like Couples or Goosen or Vijay or Els or whatever tried to "throw corn" as Brian says they'd prolly just find themselves out of their comfort zone....

Like I said....play the game with him a bit....or play it cool and keep improving yourself and your own game...

So ya I guess you have a point.

I just can't believe some of the stuff these guys say and how they talk....it just tells me that a lot of these guys honestly don't believe they have any kind of chance. That's what it seems like to me.

Honestly.....like.....well buddy YOU lose already.....lol.

Look at Furyk....not even a long hitter.....know what I mean....when did this guy get so good? And why.

And I haven't heard him say anything dumb either. (haven't heard anyway)

Always seems to be game.

There's lots of guys who'd you think have way more potential than skinny old bald loopy swing can't hit half of the par 5's in 2 Jim Furyk. lol

etc.

...

And I dunno man.....how do YOU know NOTHING effects him? He's not superman....

DiMarco even had him scared in The Masters a few years ago....I saw it in his eyes. Scared. He was feeling the heat a bit there I could tell.

Bob May duked it out with him....

Bob May? Who the hell is that.....I forget who that is already....

....?

I mean....who has ever tried to even screw with Tiger....

Steven Ames? Once....?

K so he got beat....it happens.

And now everyone's gonna say "Oh well that'll just fire him up more...every single time without fail cause it's Tiger and he does what he wants."

Maybe so but man it's better than kissing his arse that's for sure.

And Phil said something about his equipment....that wasn't even that big of a deal tho.

I can't think of any more.

You know what tho it's not even about screwing with him....just not kissing up....and thinking you can take him on....and trying to take him on. Believing in your own potential.

...

And I don't care what anyone says every person who has walked this earth has a system that gives you a shot of anxiety when you're feeling the heat....

Tiger has that same HUMAN reaction....he says he gets first tee jitters. (surprised he conceded that)

It makes it harder to think, to play golf, to do anything. It is a physical response.

As far as I can see, the other main factor is how well a player knows how to deal with it.

...

I don't mean to say that any of this would ever be easy or I know exactly what's goin on with everyone....but man......shite I don't even know what to say I just know there's something I don't like.

I mean....then again....the guy's scoring average has been very very low over the past few tourneys...

But you have to think he's really pumped to have everyone in the palm of his hand so that works for him....and at the other end of it everyone else is getting discouraged so that's working against them. Somone steps up and it could bring things back into balance more.

...

[EDIT] I was thinking.....and I guess the point of all this ranting is that it's just stupid for some of these guys to limit themselves and say "I can never ever be as good as Tiger." (and especially stupid if you say it) But who knows....I guess it means they don't want to be either.

Tiger has never limited himself...that's why he's so good and why he'll keep improving. And there is room to improve.

in the last couple of months tiger has given some good mental lessons in his press conferences
"I expect you always have to believe in yourself, and if I play well, I feel I should win. That's just the belief I have within me. It's what every player has to feel."

"You've got to always keep pushing yourself to get better. Getting better comes from within. This is a game that's fluid, it's always changing, it's always evolving, and every facet of the game can always improve"

and when asked if he thinks he can win the grand slam, which many people had thought impossible, here is what he thinks on it
"I always think I can do it. I won four tournaments this year, I've just got to win the right four. You've got to have a lot of things go your way, but it's still only four."

I wonder why he is not asked about how he mentally prepares. supposedly he used/uses meditation and hypnosis but yet not many people ask him about it in his press conference. anyone have any quotes from him on that subject?
as far as I know his mom took him to buhdist temples, meditation is a strong part of buhdism, and he says he got his mental strength from his mom.
