"If you put your mind to it, you can do it." True, False, or Somewhere in between?

People can do whatever they want to do if they put their mind to it.

REALLY?? think about that coach....you really believe people can do whatever they want to do

just by "putting their mind to it""..........that is a great way to setup an individual up for failure

people can not do anything they want Just by putting their mind to it..absolutely not......

bad??

My bad alexandjacob, I should have followed that up with "within reason".

Not BAD at all coach................I have wanted and wanted to learn golf...........not happening....

good instructor bad, medium? nope....and no one wants to learn more then i do....let me rephrase

some maybe as much..but no one more...................but.......just cause i want to....doesn't mean i can

"that is a great way to setup an individual up for failure

And therein lies the problem with today's touchy feely politically correct approach.
There is great value in failure. Hopefully, the failee will try harder the next time.

The people who succeed in whatever endeavor they are tackling absolutely put their
mind to it and don't give up without a fight. GlCoach's addition of "within reason" is certainly true.
Not everyone will succeed.

So are you saying that if someone puts their mind to something, they won't achieve anything?

Obviously not.

The sentence "People can do whatever they want to do if they put their mind to it" contains what is termed in the linguistic world as a deletion. You will see it often being intentionally used in affirmations. It's correct but incomplete. If you made it complete, it would detract from the positive power of the statement.

Your post doesn't correct the deletion. It is safe to say that you won't disagree with the inverse statement above, which means your not disagreeing with the sentence at all. Therefore you know there is a deletion. Instead you choose to intentionally frame it in disagreement and use the deletion to ridicule and then declare yourself victor. It's a underhanded and hypocritical tactic.

hmmm

Yes i do disagree with the statement...i NEVER used the word achieving. My disagreement was with the

comment of "anything can be achieved". absolutely false. When a person says ANYTHING..its usually not

accurate. I can want something a 100 percent, but may not be able to achieve it..can i get close?? sure..I

don't doubt that, but its anything that my concern is with. I want more then anything to break 100

I want it ..doesn't mean i will achieve it. The best score ever was 106....now i want to break 100

(thats the anything) i shot 104..thats achieving.... If you feel that i used an underhanded tactic..

I respect your right to feel that way....I can assure you nothing underhanded was meant....but the

nice thing about this site is you are free to verbalize your feelings without being criticized for it

thanks for your thoughts......

ps..i also want you to know i enjoy your posts here and its helping me to learn different facets

of the game...keep up the good work....

Exactly, you disagree with the statement that "if someone puts their mind to something, they won't achieve anything?" as any sane person would.

Let's look at the facts

  • Glcoach said "People can do whatever they want to do, if they put their mind to it".
  • You said"people can not do anything they want just by putting their mind to it".

You assumed that Glcoach was talking from the context of people can achieve unachievable goals. The fact is that he never said that. That was your spin on it.

So let's just get it clear that when you said

you said:
My disagreement was with the comment of "anything can be achieved". absolutely false.
He never said that.

What did I do, I rephrased and put it into the inverse order to that context for comedic illustration purposes.:D

Do you not understand that I am taking your deletion and doing what you did to him back to you? Why else would I label your action hypocritical?

you said:
When a person says ANYTHING..its usually not accurate

Let's all agree when you said ""people can not do anything they want just by putting their mind to it" that you didn't mean that "people can't do anything at all they want, if they put their mind to it". People achieve goals all the time but that's the exact way you chose to interpret Glcoach's phrase.

Either your a troll or not the sharpest tool in the shed. Which is it?

It still is a hypocritical and underhanded tactic. I explained this in my last post.

You guys are putting the rest of us to sleep. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but you're getting way off topic.

Less semantics, more making people better at golf.

alexandjacob,

Please drop the ellipses and write simple narrative sentences so that the rest of us can understand what you are talking about. I can't believe that you got your masters degree writing like this.

For the record I did ammend and include "within reason" in a later post.

I assumed that would be implied...I am not delusional enough to think someone can hack their way to the PGA tour, just because they put their mind to it. I do however feel that someone can become a reasonable "for them" golfer if they are willing to put the time, effort and thought into becoming better, in other words "put their mind to it".

That is what I meant and I should have been more clear.

Loooool

Deadly Scope if your golf game is as good as your talk your gona flat out bust jack's and Tiger's major records :D

I don't care about ellipses or alex's poor attempt at goading Scope into an amazing war of words on the internetz, where men who can't in real life, act like they can.

What I would like to point out, is that alex claims he wants to get better at golf as much or more than anyone else, but he simply can't and that proves that if you want something bad enough, you still won't get it.

The head pro at Pebble Beach a couple of years ago (maybe still there) was a guy who couldn't break 100. He devoted his life to golf and in 5 years, landed the head pro job at one of the greatest places on earth. Imagine how much he wanted it.

So I ask you alex, How much do you want to be really good at golf? How much time after work do you spend on your short game? How often do you stop by the driving range? Do you practice your pitching in your back yard? Have your neighbors stopped looking at you funny because they are now used to seeing you practicing your swing in your front lawn at all hours of the night? Have you taken a job as a cart boy so you can get free golf, free practice, and time to spend around a pro and learn? And honestly, alex, have you even had your clubs fitted to your swing?

I don't want the answers to these questions, because I already know how much you want it.

Have you ever heard of people practicing and practicing and want to get good at golf but no matter they just don't get to the level they want, they want it bad, real bad and they take lessons from every top teacher, they have all the books ,all the dvd's ,all the golf training aids, all the blood sweat and tears but just can't quite get there.

They troll the golf forums hoping for some kind of key, something , they never give up , they improve but never to their satisfaction, why, oh why can't they do it, what's missing?

I mean they would give their first born away if only they could just be really good, not asking too much just single digit hdcp. or maybe scratch, maybe it's not that easy, maybe just putting their mind to it and every thing else isn't enough, maybe their talent level isn't enough, who knows.

Sometimes you just can't be that guy from Pebble Beach and become a head pro but you can still enjoy a great game, not everyone can reach their goals, some fail but that doesn't mean you can't try , who knows, you just might get there. You might even find a teacher like Brian if your lucky.

I agree that you wrote this and you must have something seriously wrong with you to have written it.

This is a perfect example of the ego mind and the need for a scapegoat. It's a self defence mechanism. Obviously, you can't argue against the pure logic that was presented. Rather than just say you were wrong, you acclaim that you have occult powers and that this was all part your grand design.

Why is it difficult for you to admit you're wrong?

This is my last post to you on this thread because I know that you will obdurately persist in responding in order to have the last word and there is nothing more for me to achieve. That being said, you may decide against responding now just because I stated that. :D
