Manzilla/Shields..Ball position?

I wouldn't pretend to be able to give a definitive answer, but offer this.

Warming up for one of my Senior's Tournaments last year. Guy next to me is like 70 some years old and hitting it right, with cursing. He asks me what do I think. I walk over, and move the ball 1 ball width forward. He starts hitting it straight. The forward position allowed the face close more.

I had something similar happen to me. I never thought of anything as simple as moving the ball back until someone mentioned it to me. I thought it might have been the shaft of the club (it was someone elses driver as I broke the shaft on mine). You get so used to thinking about face and path, that you don't thing about something like ball position.
