He typically also aims left; so if the camera is directly behind him and he is aiming left and he takes the club away even close to parallel it's going to look very outside because of camera angle.

agree,

swing plane is 3 dimensional and hardly a "plane", this is a good example of issues using a 2d camera.

Why does Freddie make THAT backswing?

It is the easiest way to get the club where he wants it before he knocks the snot out of the ball.

So, going inside and then coming over (while staying inside a la Snead/Jones) is a safer loop for the mid/high cap player?

Lesser of two evils but yes. Reason has to do with right hand position. When they loop it back to the inside they reverse tumble it and now have an inside, usually out, path with a very late open release position. The in and overs at least have have the right palm down coming down. A lot of out to in loops release it out not down.

Well that was the technical teacher jargon, I was looking for the layman's terms reason ;)

I was trying to get folks to think....

Here is the deal—if you go out to Norman Playground and grab 10 super-athletes that never played golf or baseball, and put a small piñata on the ground, and had them stand in YOUR golf footprints, and hit the SNOT out of the piñata, LOTS OF THEM WOULD LOOK LIKE FRED COUPLES AT THE TOP OF THE SWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, I flip it on you:

Why?

Perhaps because the lifting of the bat/club with the intent of busting it pulls the shoulders and body back and ready

From a instinctive point of view,

I would of thought it would give the most direct approach to the ball, with the high hands allowing a directional force that isworking with gravity to maximise the force of the whack
