Should you try to hold the lag?

ok, for someone that does (even unintentionally) try to hold that angle and the perceived lag, along with not fully releasing the hands, what is the simplest way to get them out of that habit? in laymans terms? thanks a lot.

Reduce tensions in the hands, forearms and wrists...

Try swinging the club (practice swings) with a soft left hand using a triple overlap grip....

Easier said than done and won't work in the real world.

I have a drill that i get students to do who have this problem. Will reply when i get home tonight.

I do it as a warm up exercise (the triple overlap drill)...works for me mate..:) Have you ever tried it BTW?

Yes and it will work for a very small amount of people, in the real teaching world. Almost every golfer has too much tension and doesn't understand that trigger delay is a result of other things done and not something you try and "hold."

Thats why i said it's "easier said than done." I have a better way (adapted something brian showed me).

Will post later

Great question, Jim I'll be interested in seeing your response. I'm trying a lot of different things, working on swinging with pivot, lagging clubhead, etc., trying to loosen up the wrists a bit.

Ok, this is going to be long. I apologize, this is something i learned from Brian that MIGHT be in the building blocks video, but i haven't seen it yet.

Everything below is to be done on a HORIZONTAL PLANE.

1) Stand straight up holding a club in front of you and have the shaft be 90* to your body (I--)

2) Bend your wrist straight back to achieve a flat left wrist and a bent right wrist, the club should be pointing directly to the right, you might have to bend your right arm A BIT to get there.

3) Now bend your right arm and pivot to the right. The club should now be pointing behind you with your hands relatively by your right shoulder.

4) Pivot A LITTLE to bring your hands to roughly the middle of your chest, you shoud still have your flat left, bent right wrist, and bent right arm. You should look SIMILAR to step 2

5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 TWO MORE TIMES

6) Now repeat step 4 above but pivot HARDER and let the club THROW OUT on the ball AND ALLOW THE CLUBHEAD TO OVERTAKE YOUR HANDS so that you finish how a baseball player MIGHT look

7) Repeat steps 4-6 as many times as needed to start feeling the throwout action of the club and the NATURAL ROLLING of the clubhead through the ball.

------------------

Now simply BEND OVER and address a ball and do basically everything you just did. Except now you are not straight up.

------------------

What this does is basically get people to feel the throwout action of the club and teaches you that the correct PIVOT on the downswing is what gets you into the "lag position" so many people want.

it's nothing "mystical." It's simply a position that most will end up in when you pivot correctly on the downswing.

I need to make a video for this and it would be much simpler.

Jim, I don't know if you're familiar with Tom Tomasello's right arm swinging concept, and right arm throw out, but what your describing sounds familiar.

Tomasello WANTS you (consciously) to do it, I DON'T.

You need to use your PIVOT to create the throw out.

You shouldn't HOLD your wrists back.

You should FEEL like you are moving your hands by directing them to a spot while they are being MOVED by your pivot. Some people just FEEL the hands.

Either way, just DIRECT THEM to a spot and ALLOW the wrists to uncock.

Don't TRY TO RELEASE OR TRY NOT TO.

I am confused about the Trigger Type, Wrist Throw, used when swinging as per 12-2-0. Can you shed some light on this?

Brian, would you be kind enough to give an example of the spot the hands might commonly be directed on an average driver, and 6 iron say?
