Not a teacher ... but I would think it's to empty out the half-filled glass of golfswing misunderstanding within most high handicap golfer's minds.

An overly slow backswing with an over rotated LAFW with too closed of a clubface at the top and a high right shoulder then on the way down works the face too open some times and hits a right to right block and a duck hook on occasion.

Some folks have more physical ability than others.

Some folks are more ingrained.

But everyone, is fixable, or adjustable.

EVERYONE.

Hardest thing to fix is the mind.

Swing faults, any, no problem.

You mean draining the brain of golfswing misconceptions in general and their own particular golfswing fantasies??

How about unrealistic expectations ... or is that too devastating ..??!!!

Bad Information has to be overcome....Bad Attitude is harder....Expectations are tough if they are just totally unrealistic.

But....ALL OF THAT is in the mind, no?

What's the difference between rec'n golfers and good amateurs when they seek help from a qualified instructor?? How about a pro golfer?

When do expectations become unrealistic? I know this is different for everyone... but what are unrealistic expectations for an average golfer as compared to unrealistic expectations for say someone that plays 4 to 5 times a week?

Amateur golfers are easier to GET to do something, pros are more cautious. I am also more cautious with a PGA Tour player, I might try anything on a rec golfer. Other than that, it's very similar.

You can't regulate SCORING.

You can regulate BALL STRIKING, PITCHING, CHIPPING, PUTTING.

Scoring?

No.

Im not a teacher but wouldn't it be hard to get golfers out of the obsession with keeping the head down?

Less than 5 minutes.

I was going to guess sequencing.

For the life of me I can't seem to get this feel. I played baseball and basketball at a fairly high level. At 5'9 I could dunk a basketball. I also played some football. I also ran sub 11 seconds in the 100 meters. I am still very athletic yet I can't fully train myself out of this problem. I have improved over the years, but haven't been able to fight the urge to 'hit' the ball.

Maybe Brian has a point when he says the mind. Maybe I just have a poor mental picture of what I should be doing.

Anyway, good thoughts all, thanks.

Boy JBrunk - we could be twins! Same exact background. Being a good athlete makes it even harder to handle the struggling! I swear I could have wrote your post. Love to see what responses you get! Maybe it's just something I should embrace and learn to do it the best way possible? I didn't p/u the game seriously until later ( at 34, I'm 43 now ) I think picking it up so late means I will never be as good as I could have been if I learned young. Oh well, just something I'll have to learn to deal with.

Great thread!

Sorry, a little late here but my biggest challenge for new students to overcome is the "flip". I think there are a lot of reasons why people flip...incorrect concept, making the ball the target, poor face/grip, improper sequencing, etc.... Brian's C.O.F.F. is a great video and I've used some of the drills but I just feel this is what separates the "Rec" Golfer from the "Advanced" Golfer. Certainly it could be said Flipping could be because of Mental or Physical traits.

IMO the mental image of your golf swing is the most important factor affecting the swing. It controls your entire motion. If you can change your mental image you can more easily adopt positive swing changes.

I suspect novice golfers think they must actively 'flip' the hands to align the club to the ball at Impact ... whereas advanced golfers let it happen as a natural consequence of Release. Novice golfers just don't have the confidence or understanding of golfswing mechanics and try to consciously create a golfswing. Does that make sense to you?

the score is the hardest, hands down. They expect to shoot lower, then -> downward spiral. Then revert back to pre lesson. So basically the mind like BM states///////
