The poll of popular teachers.

I've read Leadbetter's latest offering and I don't remember him mentioning a "wide release".

In fact, he does just the opposite (if "wide release" = early wrist cock release).

Is it possible that he can have a shift in his theories? Is it possible that that you (Brian Manzella) no longer teach something you may have taught in 93' (for example)?

I really am not huge on Leadbetter, but I just don't see the evidence to support your claims.

I may be wrong. Maybe he has said this stuff in a Summit...

You are correct hue, he teaches trigger delay now...albiet not MAXimum trigger delay.

Leadbetter is #1 in the world, not doubt the top acknowleged teacher.

I am far from this #1 ranking, but way closer in the actual teaching ability ranking.

I would agree Brian, you have better info than lead by far....

no doubt that being a 'popular' teacher isn't about what you know, but who...

or Ben would be the 'man' on tv and the mass media [8D]

Damn, I hate to agree on Leadbetter. I know he has some cooky stuff, but my favorite swing belongs to one of his pupils: Nick Faldo's.

You are joking right....

Watch Nick Faldo hit some balls around someone of any class for real and see if you still enjoy his swing...

Nick Faldo... Why ?

Back when I first started playing golf, he was #1. His swing seemed to have a lot less moving parts and was simpler to try to copy then someone like Greg Norman's. So basically, since he was #1, I got to watch it a lot, and it looked easy to do.

The first time I saw Faldo play in person, I couldn't believe that he hit it so short...

So did Nick Price...

W I D E D O W N S W I N G=slow clubhead.

;)

I was surprised that Faldo's drives were 20+ yards shorter than most of the other players in the field when I saw him play in person. He must be a good 6' 3" tall and almost as big as Ernie Els.

To be fair, was he long pre-Leadbetter?

ragman: There is a guy at a club I used to play at Trevor Patmore that used to play against Faldo just before he turned pro. He says he was much longer pre Leadbetter.

Faldo did win 6 majors after Leadbetter.
He won 0 before.

Is it possible that Leadbetter actually helped Faldo become a better player?

Or would Faldo have won 10 majors with Ben Doyle?

Brady,

Maybe Faldo wins 20 majors with Ben or none or 25 with Don Villavaso or none.

Would Jack W. Nicklaus won 20 majors with HArvey Pennick or none??

All I am saying is this...would you teach someone to swing with the wide-release and high right shoulder and cupped left wrist at the top that LEADBETTER was teaching to Faldo...or the swing that Faldo actually MADE? Would you try to keep Jack Nicklaus swinging like he did when he came on tour or the reverse pivot he had by 1970?

Come on...

Brian,

I saw Nicklaus in the 70 PGA, the 77 US Open, and the 82 PGA. If you can give me a better swing than that "reverse pivot", I'll walk from Okla to Louisiana for a lesson.

MJ-you from Oklahoma? What part do you live in?

Brian,

Wouldn't you say that Toms is fairly wide without maximum trigger delay?

My point is the relationship between the student and teacher has to be productive. It is quite possible the student doesn't do exactly what you think is ideal but is successful anyway. This appears to be the case with yourself and Toms.

Sure, Faldo's swing wasn't the most dynamic of all time and Hank Khuene's may be, but who's career would you rather have.

Leadbetter, who is not my all time favorite either, has gotten results with many players. I am sure there are some that have gotten worse for whatever reason. This has happened to me and, whether you will admit it or not, to you as well.

I just think other teachers can have success with students who don't teach exactly the way I do.
