Exactly. Jack does believe it, whether everyone else laughs matters not, only he knows for sure. He has constructed his own reality when it comes to these things because of his personal belief system. Remember the short par putt he didn't make on the back nine at Augusta in 86' (shot 30 on the back nine en route to his last major). Never looked at the putter, the stroke, or himself, except to say that he got so excited he failed to see a ball mark directly in his line...In other words, it's always something else because I executed my job perfectly. He believed this and while it may seem like a fantasy charade to most, to him it was a reality.
side note - Biology of Belief is a great book about how your belief system can physically change you on a cellular level, DNA, RNA etc. Nothing about golf whatsoever but a lot about the effect your conscious thoughts can have on your entire body.
